NASHVILLE – Byron Sanford, the 2016 Great Midwest Player of the Year and the conference's all-time assists leader, is a member of the 2026 Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame Class.
Trevecca Athletics officially announces Sanford as a member of the 2026 Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame Class. The 2026 Class is scheduled to be inducted during Trevecca's Homecoming Weekend. The induction ceremony for the 2026 Class of the Trevecca Athletics Hall of Fame is set for Saturday, November 7 at 9:00 AM in the Boone Convocation Center on the Trevecca campus.
The 2026-27 school year marks the 125th anniversary of Trevecca's founding in 1901, adding significance to a Hall of Fame class connected to multiple eras of Trevecca Athletics history.
The 2026 Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame Class will be the largest in Trevecca Athletics history, celebrating the rich Trojan history during the 125th Trevecca Anniversary Celebration.
Sanford played three seasons for Trevecca and developed into one of the most productive all-around players of the program's early NCAA Division II and Great Midwest Athletic Conference era.
A COMPLETE CAREER
Sanford scored 1,379 points in 85 career games while collecting 550 rebounds, 330 assists and 182 steals.
He averaged 16.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.1 steals per game for his career while shooting 48.5 percent from the field.
Sanford finished his Trevecca career ranked No. 2 in Great Midwest history in scoring and tied for No. 1 in conference history in field goals made.
His 330 assists made him the Great Midwest's all-time career leader, while his 550 rebounds ranked No. 3 in league history.
Sanford also developed his perimeter game throughout his career, improving from 20 percent from three-point range during his first season to 38 percent during his final season.
2016 GREAT MIDWEST PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Sanford completed his career by earning Great Midwest Player of the Year and Great Midwest First Team honors in 2016.
He started all 32 games and led Trevecca in points, rebounds, assists, and steals.
Sanford scored 568 points, collected 237 rebounds, distributed 135 assists, and recorded 55 steals during the season.
His performance placed him among the Great Midwest leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.
Sanford was also named Great Midwest Player of the Week twice during the season and earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week recognition on Feb. 2.
2014-15 BREAKTHROUGH
Sanford earned Great Midwest All-Conference Second Team recognition in 2015.
He played and started all 28 games, scored 506 points, distributed 125 assists, and recorded 76 steals.
Sanford averaged 18.1 points and 4.5 assists per game and led the conference in assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio.
He ranked second with 76 steals and third in the league with 506 points.
Sanford scored 32 points against Missouri S&T on Dec. 12, 2014, and followed with 34 points against Cedarville on Jan. 17, 2015.
His season included two double-doubles along with Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week recognition on Dec. 9 and March 4 and Great Midwest Player of the Week honors on Dec. 14.
FROM EASTERN HIGH SCHOOL TO TREVECCA
Sanford came to Trevecca from Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky, where he played for coach Jason Couch.
He lettered four seasons and helped Eastern produce 65 victories during his junior and senior seasons.
The program won Louisville Invitational Tournament championships in 2009 and 2011 along with two regional championships.
Sanford was a three-time all-tournament selection and averaged 10 points and five assists per game as a senior.
At Trevecca, he played in 25 games during his first season and averaged 12.2 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 48.4 percent from the field.
From there, Sanford developed into an all-conference selection and ultimately the Great Midwest Player of the Year.
HALL OF FAME NUMBERS
Sanford's three seasons connected individual production with an important period in Trevecca men's basketball history as the program established itself in NCAA Division II and the Great Midwest.
His 1,379 points, 550 rebounds, 330 assists and 182 steals reflect his impact throughout the stat sheet, while his Great Midwest Player of the Year award and historic conference rankings define his place in that era.
Sanford enters the Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame as a conference player of the year, the Great Midwest's all-time assists leader, and one of the most statistically complete players to wear the Purple and White.
