HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team secured a Gulf South Conference road series victory Saturday with a 7-6 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville at Charger Park.
Trevecca improved to 17-14 overall and 13-14 in GSC play, taking two of three games in the series. UAH moved to 31-17 overall and 16-12 in conference play.
The Trojans have won four of nine GSC series this season with two remaining and have taken at least one game in every series since the opening weekend.
SERIES HISTORY
In the NCAA Division II era, UAH entered the weekend with a 6-5 edge in the series. With the results this weekend, the all-time series is tied 6-6. The Chargers had won three of the previous four meetings before Saturday. Trevecca has won four of the last seven matchups.
Trevecca 7, UAH 6
Trevecca used a late-inning surge to secure the series in Saturday's finale.
UAH scored first before the Trojans tied the game in the third inning when Bailey Goad drove in a run on a fielder's choice to make it 1-1.
Trevecca added three runs in the fourth inning. Kyleigh Burgett drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Addy Grace Summers followed with a two-run single to give the Trojans a 4-1 lead.
UAH scored once in the fourth and once in the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-3 entering the seventh.
In the top of the seventh, Trevecca added three runs. Zoe Lawrence delivered an RBI single, and Sarah Nicholson followed with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 7-3.
UAH responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-6 and put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Bailey Goad induced a ground ball to shortstop Kyleigh Burgett, who recorded the 6-3 putout to end the game.
NOTES
Bailey Goad improved to 12-4 with a complete-game win.
Sarah Nicholson hit a two-run home run and recorded three RBI.
Addy Grace Summers went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
Trevecca finished with eight hits.
SEASON TO DATE
Trevecca opened the season 4-0 before dropping its first GSC series at home to Valdosta State.
The Trojans took one game in consecutive series against Montevallo and West Florida before earning their first GSC series win against Mississippi College. Trevecca followed with a road series win at Christian Brothers.
The Trojans also secured a series win at West Alabama and recorded a three-game sweep of Delta State at home.
NEXT ON THE DIAMOND
Trevecca returns home for a six-game homestand to close out the regular season.
The Lee University Flames (17-31, 8-18 GSC) visit for a three-game series beginning Friday, April 24, at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. The series with the longtime rivals from Cleveland, Tenn. is in favor of the Trojans 5-2. Lee did take two of three from the Trojans last season in Cleveland.
The regular season concludes with a three-game series against Auburn Montgomery softball on the Hill during graduation weekend. The series begins with a doubleheader Friday, May 1, and concludes Saturday, May 2. The Warhawks have taken all four meetings in the NCAA era. They swept the three-game regular season series in Montgomery, then beat the Trojans 1-0 in the GSC Championships in Oxford, AL.
