JACKSON, Tenn. - The Trevecca Nazarene University softball team opened its Gulf South
Conference series with a hard-fought extra-inning victory Friday afternoon, defeating Union 4-3
in eight innings at Fesmire Field.
The Trojans (7-7, 3-7 GSC) used timely hitting and strong relief pitching to secure the win over
Union (9-14, 4-6 GSC), highlighted by a go-ahead RBI single from
Parker Herrin in the top of
the eighth inning.
Trevecca 4, Union 3 (8 innings)
Trevecca broke through in the third inning to take the early lead.
Kyleigh Burgett opened the scoring with a solo home run to left field, putting the Trojans in front
1-0. Later in the inning,
Shay Hollingsworth doubled and eventually scored on an RBI single by
Brianna Asmondy, extending the lead to 2-0.
Union answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, but Trevecca pushed its advantage
back to two in the fourth.
Sarah Kinderdine doubled to start the frame and came home when
Annabelle Ellis delivered an RBI single to right field to make it 3-1.
The Bulldogs rallied in the sixth inning with two runs to tie the game at 3-3 and force a tight
finish.
Trevecca had a chance in the seventh when
Sarah Nicholson singled and moved into scoring
position, but Union escaped the inning to send the game into extras.
In the top of the eighth, the Trojans produced the decisive moment.
Annalise Mecklenburg
started the rally with a double to right-center field. With two outs,
Parker Herrin stepped in and
delivered a clutch RBI single to right field, scoring Mecklenburg and giving Trevecca a 4-3 lead.
Herrin then returned to the circle and closed out the game in the bottom half of the inning,
securing the extra-inning victory for the Trojans.
