Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Open Final GSC Road Trip with Sweep of CBU

MEMPHIS – With six matches remaining in the Gulf South Conference regular season, the Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team opened their final road trip in the conference. The Trojans faced one of their oldest rivals - dating all the way back to the days of the Volunteer State Athletic Conference in the 1970s - and the Trojans took care of business at Canale Arena.

Trevecca (12-11, 9-4 GSC) hit .246 as a team in the match, while they held Christian Brothers University (7-18, 3-10 GSC) to an attack percentage of just .111 as the Trojans swept the Buccaneers, 3-0.

SERIES HISTORY

Trevecca has now won eight of the 13 matches in the rally scoring era - since 2000 - and the Trojans have won seven of the last eight in the series. The meeting will be the last as conference foes for the foreseeable future, as the Buccaneers have announced they are moving to the NAIA and the Mid-South Conference in 2027.

MATCH RECAP

CBU opened the match by winning four of the first six points, and the Buccaneers led 7-4 early on. Jordan Hunt notched a block and a kill as a part of a 4-1 run that squared the score at 8-8, and moments later an ace from Emma Schnitzer gave the Trojans the 12-11 lead. CBU inched back in front to take an 18-16 lead, but Hunt ignited another Trevecca run with a kill - this one a 6-0 spurt that gave the Trojans a 22-18 advantage. The teams split the final six points - with each winning three points on the other's serve - and Isabella Sherrod capped the set with a kill to give Trevecca the 25-22 set win.

The momentum carried into the early part of the second stanza, as the Trojans opened on a 7-1 run. CBU closed the gap to 9-7, but Emma Schnitzer, Hunt, and Kayla Bullard each scored as a part of a quick 4-0 spurt that gave the Trojans a 14-8 lead. Again, the Bucs pulled to within two, but a 7-3 Trevecca stretch gave the Trojans the 23-17 lead late in the frame. Three CBU points pulled the margin back to 23-20, but the Trojans scored the final two tallies - again capped by a kill from Sherrod - as they took the set 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

CBU held close early in the third stanza, but a pair of kills from Katilyn Grant helped the Trojans open a 9-3 lead. The Buccaneers closed to within two at 11-9, but with the Trojans leading 12-10, Hunt helped spark the push that put the match to bed. She had a kill to start the run, and Brynne Krengnes stepped back to serve and she served the Trojans to a 10-0 run that included three kills by Bullard, two by Schnitzer, and one from Krangnes herself. CBU scored four points to close the gap to 22-14, but Trevecca won three of the final four points to complete the sweep with a 25-15 win in the third.

TROJAN HIGHLIGHTS
  • Brynne Krangnes served up 33 assists in the match, and she added one kill and seven digs
  • Lilly Vanbebber pulled up 18 digs in the match, Sherrod completed the double-double with 13 digs, and Kayla Bullard recorded 12 digs as well.
