Trevecca Women’s Soccer | Early Deficit Too Much to Overcome as Trojans Fall 2-1 at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — For much of the match on Saturday, the Trevecca Nazarene University women's soccer team was the better team on the field at Auburn University Montgomery. Unfortunately for the Trojans, the territorial control did not convert into goals, and Trevecca took a tough loss as the Gulf South Conference season winds toward a conclusion.

Trevecca (6-5-3, 3-4-2 GSC) out-shot AUM (5-7-3, 3-6-1 GSC) 14-11 in the match - including a 9-4 edge in the second half - but eight AUM saves helped the Warhawks take the win, 2-1.

The loss drops Trevecca into the eight spot in the GSC table, which would be the final spot in the GSC Championship. That position is precarious, though, as with the defeat to AUM, the Trojans would lose a potential tiebreaker to both of the teams behind them still alive in the race - AUM and Mississippi Christian. Both teams defeated Trevecca in the regular season.

THE SERIES

The match was just the third ever between the two sides, and the all-time series is now all square at 1-1-1. The Trojans won in Montgomery in 2024, and the teams drew in Nashville last season.

THE MATCH

Trevecca took the opening kickoff and maintained possession for the first minute and a half, but they were unable to generate a shot. Auburn Montgomery got the first shot of the match in the eighth minute, when a try from Gabby Benavidez went high. Trevecca's first shot came in the 16th minute when Kayelee Maners was turned away by AUM's Leslie Azouer to keep things scoreless.

Moments later, AUM broke through.

Chloe Wallace tallied her first goal of the match - her third of the season - in the 17th minute on the assist from Courtney Pigford. Just five minutes later, Wallace struck again to double the AUM lead - this time on an assist from Eva Hendriks.

Trevecca actually had a good amount of pressure on AUM in the opening stanza, as the Trojans had four shots, two of them on target, and four corners in the first 45 minutes.

In the 38th minute, AUM had a chance to push their lead to three goals when the Warhawks were awarded a penalty. Wallace stepped to the spot looking for the hat trick, but TNU's Penelope Charroin dove to her left and saved the PK to keep the score at 2-0.

The Trojans built on that momentum, and in the 41st minute, they built a chance up the right wing. Addison Brandon crossed a ball into the box from near the right side touch line, and Anna Farrell headed the ball down toward the goal. That's where Riley Kate Collins was waiting and she put a shot past Azouer to pull a goal back, and at the half, Trevecca trailed 2-1.

The halftime break did little to break the Trevecca momentum, as the Trojans spent much of the next half hour on the AUM side of the halfway line. Trevecca had the first six shots of the second stanza, but they were unable to find the equalizer as Azouer made two more saves to keep her team in the lead.

As the clock wound down, the Trojans continued to push the issue, but despite the chances Trevecca created, they were unable to convert with a goal. The best chance came with three minutes remaining when a cross into the box was picked out of the air by Azouer with a Trojan attacker in behind her all alone. Trevecca got a corner kick in the final minute that went begging, and with seven seconds left, one final free kick fell harmlessly short of the area, as AUM held on for the 2-1 win.
