Trevecca Men’s Soccer | No. 20 Trojans Upset No. 10 AUM 3-0 in Montgomery; Share 1st Place in GSC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Saturday's contest for the Trevecca Nazarene University men's soccer team was arguably the biggest match in program history. In 28 seasons of Trevecca soccer history, never before had the Trojans faced a ranked opponent while also ranked themselves, and Trevecca came out with the urgency such a match commanded.

Haden Brown became the NCAA era single season assists record holder with two helpers tonight. The true freshman now has nine assists on the year. He was tied for the record with Judah Jones and Jeremiah Wright. Wright accomplished the feat twice with seven assists in 2013 and again in 2016.

Trevecca (11-1-2, 6-1-2 GSC) - ranked No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches poll -  set a new program record for single season wins, and Chris Douglas notched a brace to claim the Trevecca NCAA-era career goals record with his 26th career marker. Trevecca went into Montgomery and upset No. 10 Auburn Montgomery (9-2-3, 6-1-2 GSC) in convincing fashion, 3-0.

Douglas surpassed the career total of Jeremiah Wright who scored 25 goals from 2013-16, and he is now within six points of Wright's career points record of 67. Only Mauricio Dos Santos (40; 2002-03) and Mark Foster (41; 2005-08) have scored more goals in their careers at Trevecca than Douglas.

The win not only sets a new program all-time single season wins mark, but it gives the Trojans the inside track to at least a share of the GSC title with one match to play. Trevecca and AUM are tied atop the GSC table, but the Trojans hold the tiebreaker, which. Only Alabama-Huntsville can catch the leading two teams, but they are two points behind with only three points remaining available. With those factors known, Trevecca can clinch a share of the GSC title and the top-seed in the GSC Championship with a win in their final regular season home match.

THE SERIES

THE MATCH

AUM appeared to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, but a goal from Nathan Le Roux was wiped out on an offside call, and the match remained scoreless. Moments later, the Trojans dynamic duo up top gave the Trojans the early lead.

pushed forward trying to equalize. Both teams had chances in the remaining 35 minutes - Trevecca out-shot AUM 7-6 - but none of the AUM shots were on target, and at intermission, the Trojans held the 1-0 lead.WarhawksTrevecca played the ball up to Chris Douglas in the middle, and he was off to the races down the right side. Douglas sprinted to the top of the box, and then he stopped and sent a pass over to Daniel Shiel who settled the ball and fired home his eighth goal of the season to put Trevecca on top 1-0. AUM had a second goal disallowed on an offside in the 10th Minute, as the

Early in the second half, the Trojans doubled their lead. Haden Brown played a ball into the box from the left wing side, and Chris Douglas got on the end of it. Douglas buried his 14th goal of the season - a goal which tied the program's NCAA-era career goals mark - as the Trojans pushed their lead to 2-0.

That assist by Haden Brown gave him the outright record for assists in a season.

AUM had a pair of dangerous chances in the ensuing moments, but a shot from Fabio Guerreiro hit the left post and the margin remained at two. In the 51st minute, AUM got a corner kick, but the service crossed the face of goal and went out of play untouched for a goal kick.

As the clock wound down, the posts proved why they are referred to as a goalkeeper's best friend. In the 60th minute, AUM had another chance to get on the board, and again they hit the woodwork - this time the crossbar -  and the ball stayed out. With less than nine minutes left, AUM had another opportunity when Brennan Greer got a shot just above the outstretched fingertips on Walker's right hand, but he also failed to beat the crossbar.

In the 89th minute, Douglas delivered the knockout blow. Haden Brown blasted the ball into space where Douglas ran onto the ball with no one between himself and the goal. He took a shot from about 22 yards out that AUM keeper Jakob Buhrkuhl got a piece of, but it popped high into the air and came down just under the bar as Douglas claimed the career goals record with his 15th tally, and the Trojans bled out the clock to take the 3-0 win.
