Trevecca Men's Basketball | Turnovers, Missed Free Throws Costly in Loss at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team hit the road on Thursday night, beginning a difficult weekend trip to Mississippi. The Trojans took on the Statesmen of Delta State University, and while the Trojans shot the basketball well from the floor, turnovers and missed free throws proved costly for Trevecca in a tough road loss.

Trevecca (9-5, 4-4 GSC) turned the ball over 18 times in the game, and they missed 11 free throws as Delta State (6-8, 3-6 GSC) rallied from an early deficit to take the win, 92-78.

HOW IT HAPPENED

As they did on Sunday at home, Trevecca started quickly again. Trevecca held Delta State to just two made field goals in the opening eight minutes of play, and in that span, the Trojans were on fire. Trevecca got 3-pointers from Fred Bailey, Tyler Moore, Latham Binkley, and Justin Bass during the run, and the Trojans opened a 24-7 lead with 12:16 to go in the opening half. Delta State answered with an immediate 11-0 run to cut the Trevecca lead to six in just more than two minutes of game time. A later 14-3 run gave the Statesmen the lead at 32-30, but Trevecca bounced back to take a 46-41 lead into the locker room.

Spencer White, Jax Abernathy, and Bailey each scored at the rim in the opening moments of the second half, but the Trojans were unable to stretch the lead significantly, and with 16:42 to go in the game, Delta State mounted a 7-0 run that tied the score at 52. A Bass triple gave Trevecca the lead back, but as the clock wound down, Trevecca struggled to protect the basketball, and Delta State surged in front. The Statesmen inched the lead out to double digits, and Delta State closed it out at the foul line for the 92-78 win.

THE TEAM

The Trojans narrowly missed out on making 50% of their shots from the floor, as they made 28 of 57 shots in the game, including a 7-for-22 mark from behind the arc. But in the second half, the Trojans were only 9-for-27 (33.3%) from the floor and 1-for-11 (9.1%) from deep. Trevecca turned the ball over 13 times in the second half, and they were 15-for-26 (57.5%) from the foul line in the contest.

THE PLAYERS

Bailey led four Trevecca players in double figures with 18 points in the game, and he added six rebounds and three assists. Abernathy scored 15 points in the game, Bass had 11, and Da'Shon Fisher chipped in 10. Jeremy Jackson, Jr. led Trevecca with eight rebounds, and Moore dished out a team-best four assists.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will continue their trip in the Magnolia State on Saturday afternoon, when they will be in Clinton, Mississippi for a matinee 4 p.m. tip against Mississippi College (8-7, 5-3 GSC).
