Trevecca Men’s Basketball | For the Third time; Trojan Fred Bailey Selected Gulf South Freshman of the Week

NASHVILLEFred Bailey, a freshman guard on the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team, is  the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 5, 2026. It is the third time this season the Pope John Paul II product has earned the honor.

 

The 6-foot-2 Hendersonville native averaged 10.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game for the week. Bailey scored 21 points in 31 minutes of action while shooting 42.9% (6-for-14) from the field and 90% (9-for-10) from the free-throw line.

 

Bailey, who played for Trevecca men's basketball alum Charles Wade at Pope John Paul II, helped lead the Trojans to a 2-0 week.

 

The JPII product closed the week and opened the 2026 Gulf South Conference schedule with 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds in a 78-63 win over in-state rival Lee University. He shot 57.1% (4-for-7) from the field and 90% (9-for-10) from the free-throw line.

 

In an 84-79 New Year's Eve win over Cumberland, Bailey recorded six rebounds, four assists, one steal and four points.

 

On the season, Bailey ranks second on the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game. He is also averaging 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per contest while shooting 45.9% from the field and 81.2% from the free-throw line. He has recorded two double-doubles this season and has been close to a triple-double on multiple occasions.

 

Trevecca is off to a 9-4 start under first-year head coach Nate Moran. Picked eighth in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Trojans are fifth in the conference standings with a 4-3 league record and own the fourth-best offense in the GSC.

 

Trevecca travels to Cleveland, Miss., to face Delta State University (5-8, 2-6 GSC) on Thursday, Jan. 8, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. The Statesmen, led by Kolby Horace, were picked seventh in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Bryce Clayton ranks 17th in the conference in scoring at 13.4 points per game, while JeMarion Westbrook is eighth in the GSC in rebounding at 6.5 per game.

 

The Trojans conclude the two-game road trip Saturday, Jan. 10, in Clinton, Miss., against Mississippi College (7-7, 4-4 GSC) with a 4 p.m. tipoff. The Choctaws were picked 12th in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Marcel Bridges ranks seventh in the GSC in scoring at 16.5 points per game and third in field-goal percentage at 54.6%, while Avaughn Johnson is fifth in the league in rebounding at 8.2 per game.

 

Trevecca returns home Thursday, Jan. 15, to host Christian Brothers University (2-9, 1-6 GSC) from Memphis, Tenn., with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Bucs were picked 11th in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Iman Kheirati ranks second in the conference in rebounding at 10.1 per game, and Marquis Gill is the fifth-leading scorer in the GSC.

 

Union University (7-6, 3-4 GSC) visits Trojan Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 17, for a 4 p.m. tipoff. The Bulldogs, who were picked sixth in the GSC Preseason Coaches' Poll, feature the conference's leading scorer in Will Lovings-Watts at 18.7 points per game.
