Trevecca Volleyball | Trojans Sweep UAH Chargers; Remain Undefeated in Gulf South

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (9-3, 3-0 GSC) stayed perfect in Gulf South Conference play with a decisive 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-18, 25-13) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (9-3, 1-2 GSC). It marks the Trojans' third all-time win over UAH inside SportsMED Arena at Spragins Hall.

Series History

UAH, picked No. 2 in the 2025 GSC Preseason Poll, now holds a 23-6 advantage in the NCAA DII era of the series. The Trojans' last win in Huntsville came in 2021. While the Chargers had dominated much of the rivalry—winning 23 of 26 prior meetings—the series has tightened since 2021, with UAH holding just a 4-3 edge over the last seven matchups.

The series began in 1989, when Trevecca won the first two meetings before UAH responded with 13 straight victories to set the tone.

Match Recap

Set one stayed tight early, with UAH pushing ahead 7-4 before Trevecca answered with a 3-0 run to tie it. The teams traded points until, tied 14-14, the Trojans built a small cushion they never surrendered, closing the set 25-23.

The Trojans carried that momentum into set two, racing out to a 4-0 start. UAH briefly closed within one at 4-3, but an 8-3 Trevecca run extended the lead to 12-5. The Trojans maintained control from there, finishing the set 25-18 for a 2-0 match lead.

In the third set, Trevecca overcame an early tie at 3-3 and steadily pulled away. The Trojans opened a double-digit margin and cruised to a 25-13 win, sealing the sweep.

Trojan Highlights

·       Trevecca hit a blistering .408 as a team while holding UAH to .144.

·       Skias Hainline dished out 41 assists to go along with six digs, three kills, and three blocks.

·       Defensively, Lily Vanbebber tallied a match-high 15 digs plus four assists and an ace, while Kayla Bullard posted seven kills and 10 digs. Isabella Sherrod chipped in 11 digs.

UP NEXT
The Trojans return home for a three game homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 30 (6:00 PM) when the GSC Preseason No.3 Lee University Flames (5-7, 1-2 GSC) visit. The Trojans and Flames have a long history in the NAIA era, but in the D2 era (since 2014), the Flames have a 6-3 edge. But the Trojans have won two of the last three. The teams split their first GSC matches last season. Lee has a 42-9 edge in the series including the NAIA era games. The teams first played volleyball in 1989.

The GSC Preseason No. 10 West Alabama Tigers (6-4, 2-1 GSC) opens the October slate when they visit Trojan Fieldhouse on Friday, Oct. 3 at 6:00 PM. Trevecca took both meetings in 2024, the only two games between the schools in volleyball.

Preseason No. 4 Mississippi College (6-7, 3-0 GSC) faces the Trojans on the Hill at 1:00 PM on Saturday, Oct. 4. The two teams split the regular season series last year, but the Choctaws won the rubber match in the GSC Championships. They now lead the all-time series 2-1.

Next, the Trojans hit the road for two matches, first a second meeting with the Union University Bulldogs at Fred Delay Gym in Jackson (10/7 – 6 PM). The Trojans swept Union to open the GSC season on Sept. 23 at Trojan Fieldhouse.

Then, the Trojans visit Alabama again, this time in Montgomery against the AUM Warhawks in the AUM Athletics Complex (10/11 – 2 PM).

The first meeting of the year with Christian Brothers University follows at Trojan Fieldhouse on October 14 at 6 PM.

The longest road trip of the year comes next. First, a trip to Valdosta State University at 5 PM on Oct. 17. The next day, Oct. 18, the Trojans play at preseason favorite University of West Florida at 2 PM.
