Trevecca Softball | Trojans Breakout #MASHVILLE to Take GSC Series at Valdosta

VALDOSTA, Ga. – No. 12 Trevecca Nazarene University softball (11-4, 2-4 GSC) claimed their first GSC series victory, gaining the rubber game of the series with over Valdosta State (6-10, 2-3 GSC), 8-6, on Sunday at Steel's Diamond.

 

The Trojans hit nine home runs in the three-game series with Brianna Asmondy cracking five home runs and driving in ten runs.

Trevecca takes a 2-1 lead in the all-time series.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED – TNU 8, VSU 6
The final game of the series went the way of the Trojans. Both teams scored a run in their half of the first inning. Trevecca scored their run without a hit. Leadoff hitter Annabelle Ellis reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole second. Shay Hollingsworth also reached on a hit-by-pitch. An out later, both runners moved up on a bag to second and third on a passed ball. With two out, another passed ball scored Ellis from third.

 

The Trojans put the game nearly out of reach with a five-run second. Maddie Poschke lead off the inning with her second home run of the weekend. A single and four consecutive SAC bunts scored the third and fourth runs for the Trojans. Then, Brianna Asmondy hit her fifth homer of the weekend with a runner on for a 6-1 Trojan lead. 

 

The Blazers cut the Trojan lead to two, 6-4, with a three-run third. The Trojans responded quickly in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run from Ashley Sensing, giving the Trojans the winning margin, 8-4. The Blazers added two more, but TNU held them there for the 8-6 win.


CIRCLE AND BOX NOTES
Freshmen Zoe Lawrence went 3-3 in the game and 4-4 on the weekend.

Kylie Chetakian went 2-4 with a run scored.

Ashley Sensing had a two-run homer and went the distance in the circle with five strikeouts.
Sensing is 7-2 with a. 2.29 ERA on the year and has 53 strikeouts over 58 innings pitched.

Sensing at the plate is hitting .414 with a homer, 13 runs, a double, and seven RBI.

Asmondy is hitting .442 with 13 runs, four doubles, seven home runs, 17 RBI, and has a 1.023 slugging percentage.


NEXT ON THE DIAMOND    
The Trojans open their home Gulf South season on Friday when they welcome in the University of Montevallo (8-7, 3-3 GSC). Friday, Feb. 28 the Trojans take on the 'Falcons at 3:00 PM in a single game. On Saturday, the Trojans play Montevallo at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. The Trojans lead the series 2-0 in the NCAA era.

 

The following week, the Trojans travel to Pensacola, Fla. for a series with the West Florida Argonauts March 7-8. This will be the first meeting in the NCAA era for the two schools in softball.

 

The return home comes March 14-15 when old rival Union University (2-10, 2-3 GSC) visits the Hill for the first time as a conference member in the NCAA era. The two schools played some memorable games when each school was a member of the NAIA and TranSouth conference. In the NCAA era, Trevecca has a 10-6 edge in the series. The teams split a doubleheader last year, but TNU has won winning seven of the last eight.
