NASHVILLE – Jax Abernathy, a freshman guard on the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team, is the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week for the week ending Sunday, December 21, 2025.
The Calhoun, Ga., native averaged 21 points per game on the week in a pair of home Gulf South Conference games at Trojan Fieldhouse.
Abernathy, who played for fellow Trevecca alum Tyler Watkins at Christian Heritage High School, shot 55.2% from the field during the week while hitting 37.5% from three-point range and 71.4% from the line. He added 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game.
The six-foot-four scored 21 points against Valdosta State, the preseason No. 25 NABC and preseason No. 2 GSC. He added 22 points against West Florida. Against VSU, he shot 66.7% (8-12) and 57.1% (4-7) from three.
Abernathy has four 20+ games to date in his first season on the Hill.
The freshman is leading the Trojans in scoring at 15.7 points per game this year. He's hit at least one three-pointer in all but two games and is averaging 2.5 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.0 steals per game.
TNU's 36-point (107-71) win over VSU is the first time the storied Blazer program has been beaten by 30 or more since the 2011-2012 season. In fact, the Blazers had not lost by 36 or more since 1993.
As a team, TNU hit 18 three-pointers against the Blazers, one short of a school record.
Saturday, the Trojans rallied from 19 down against the West Florida Argonauts to pull within two before falling 82-78.
This is the third Gulf South Freshman of the Week honor secured by a Trevecca Trojan this year. Fred Bailey earned the honor on Nov. 18 and again on Nov. 25.
The Trojans finished their pre-Christmas schedule 7-4 overall and 3-3 in the Gulf South. The Trojans were picked to finish eighth in the Gulf South Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Trojans have several good wins on the year, including beating No. 21 UAH and Tusculum on the road and knocking off Valdosta State and Embry-Riddle in the Fieldhouse.
Trevecca returns to action on New Year's Eve when they host longtime NAIA rival Cumberland University at 2 PM. Their first game in 2026 is against another longtime rival, Lee University, on Sunday, January 4th at 4:00 PM.
