Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Blaze Past VSU; Host UWF in Final Pre-Christmas Tilt Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team returned home on Thursday night for another difficult challenge in the Gulf South Conference. The Trojans welcomed the Valdosta State University Blazers to the Trojan Fieldhouse, as the first of two games to wrap up the pre-Christmas portion of the schedule.

The Blazers were picked second in the GSC preseason poll, but the Trojans were not fazed, and Trevecca (7-3, 3-2 GSC) handed the Blazers (6-4, 1-3 GSC) a 107-71 defeat. The win marked the first time a team had defeated VSU by 30 or more points since the end of the 2011-12 season when CChristian Brothers defeated the Blazers 83-52 in the GSC Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams pushed the pace in the opening half, and the Trojans were able to take advantage of the tempo. Trevecca forced nine VSU turnovers and turned those into 11 points on the offensive end, and midway through the frame, a 10-3 Trojan run pushed Trevecca out to a 33-24 lead with 3:11 to play. Trevecca scored eight of the final 11 points of the half as well, and at the break, Trevecca held the lead 41-28.

The Trojans stepped on the gas coming out of the halftime break. In the first 61 seconds of the second stanza, Trevecca connected from deep three times - two by Jax Abernathy and one from Brett Wright - as a part of a 9-1 run that pushed their lead out to 50-29. VSU tried to climb back into the game on multiple occasions, but the Trojans were able to keep the Blazers at arm's length in each case. The Trojans' lead reached 30 for the first time on a 3-pointer from Abernathy with 9:53 to go, and the Trojans closed the game on a 12-2 run to take the win 107-71.

THE TEAM

Trevecca eclipsed the 50% shooting barrier for the third time on the season. Trevecca made 36 of 71 (50.7%) shots in the game, and 18 of 43 (41.9%) from long distance. At the line, the Trojans were 17 for 20 (85%) as well, and the Trojans led for a total of 36:31 in the game. Trevecca won the battle of the boards 43-36, and the Trojans out-scored the Blazers 44-31 off the bench, 23-17 on the fast break, 18-15 off turnovers, and 36-32 in the paint.

THE PLAYERS

Five Trojans scored in double figures on the night. Abernathy led the way with 21 points, but Fred Bailey was right on his heels with 18. Wright tallied 16 points, and Da'Shon Fisher (12) and Justin Bass (11) also reached double digits. Jeremy Jackson, Jr. led the Trojans with seven rebounds, and Spencer White dished up a team-high six assists in the game.

UP NEXT

Trevecca will wrap up the first semester in GSC play on Saturday when they welcome the University of West Florida Argonauts (8-3, 1-2 GSC) to the Trojan Fieldhouse at 4 p.m.
