Trevecca Men's Basketball | Offense Explodes in Homecoming Win over Sewanee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team began the Nathan Moran era in style on Saturday afternoon at the Trojan Fieldhouse. The Trojans roared out of the gates on Homecoming weekend with a 53-point first half, and a 37-point exhibition win over the Sewanee Tigers, 115-78.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The teams split the first 20 points evenly, but with 14:30 to play in the opening half, Tyler Moore found Justin Bass for a layup that ignited a 10-0 Trevecca run, and the Trojans were off to the races. Sewanee managed to cut the margin to nine, but Moore and Bass combined to splash three straight 3-point shots midway through the half, and that set off another lengthy run - this one a 14-2 stretch that opened the Trojans' lead up to 40-21, and at the break, Trevecca led comfortably, 53-31.

Trevecca scored 10 of the first 14 points of the second stanza, and that helped the Trojans take a 63-34 lead, and Dunks from Latham Binkley and Da'Shon Fisher brought the Homecoming partisans to their feet. Trevecca led 75-42 after the Fisher slam, and less than seven minutes had elapsed in the stanza. Binkley sent the Trojans over the century mark with a triple with 4:53 to play, and Trevecca cruised home with the 115-78 win.

The Trojans broke the 100-point barrier on Homecoming weekend for the second time in the last three seasons, and the 115 points marked the highest Homecoming output from a Trevecca team since the 2007-08 Trojans put up 128 against Boyce College (Ky.). That 2007-08 team featured a double-double from Josh Helton, who was posthumously inducted to the Trevecca Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday morning prior to the game along with three other Trevecca athletes and Trevecca SID, Gregory Ruff - who was the radio voice of that 2007-08 team on WNAZ.

THE TEAM

The Trojans shot 53.8 percent (43-for-80) from the floor, and nearly as well (48.5%, 16-for-33) from long distance. The Trojans were 13-for-18 (72.2%) from the foul line, and they out-rebounded the Tigers 48-39. Trevecca out-scored Sewanee 64-6 off the bench, 17-2 off turnovers, 35-10 on the fast break, and 50-38 in the paint as well.

THE PLAYERS

Six Trojans scored in double-figures, led by Jax Abernathy's 17 tallies. Latham Binkley added 15, Justin Bass netted 14, Brett Wright tallied 13, and Fred Bailey and Tyler Moore added 11 apiece. Wright and Jeremy Jackson, Jr. led the way with eight boards each, and Bailey and Moore also dished out eight assists in the game.

UP NEXT

The Trojans will open the regular season next weekend with the Robert Garrett Classic on Saturday and Sunday. Trevecca will welcome the Palm Beach Atlantic University Sailfish, the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles, and the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers to the Trojan Fieldhouse to take part in the Classic. Friday will feature Trevecca battling Palm Beach Atlantic (0-0) at 4, with Morehouse (0-0) and Embry-Riddle (0-0) squaring off at 6 p.m.; and on Sunday, the Sailfish and Maroon Tigers will battle at 2 p.m., while Trojans will take on the Eagles at 4 p.m.
