NASHVILLE, Tenn. - for the Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team, Wednesday was the continuation of a new tradition. After playing two games on their home floor over the weekend, the Trojans hosted their final non-conference home game of the year for Education Day – a special matinee tip-off that allowed for local schools to participate by bringing their students to the Trojan Fieldhouse. The Trojans (2-1) made it worth their while, as they cruised past the Oakwood University (Ala.) Ambassadors (1-5), 99.66
HOW IT HAPPENED
Oakwood scored the first basket of the day, but from there, Trevecca took control. TNU needed only 39 seconds to rip off a 7-0 run and claim a 7-2 lead, and from that point forward Trevecca held the lead. Oakwood did piece together a 6-0 spurt midway through the half to pull within one at 17-16 with 12:48 to play before the break, but a Spencer Wright 3-pointer at 11:42 snapped that run and ignited a 16-3 outburst from the Trojans that covered the next 5:54 of game time. During that stretch, Trevecca held Oakwood to 1-for-9 shooting and forced two turnovers, while the Trojans made 5-of-9 shots including four of seven attempts from beyond the arc, and the Trojans built a 33-19 lead. Another run late in the half – this one a 21-2 stretch – saw the Trojans push their halftime lead all the way out to 54-23.
The second half was all about the Trojans managing the gap they had built in the opening 20 minutes. Oakwood chiseled their way back to within 56-35 at the 17:22 mark, but the Trojans kept the margin north of the 20-point barrier for much of the rest of the way. As time ticked away in the game, the Trojans pushed the lead back out beyond the 30-point barrier – out to as many as 35 at 93-58 on a pair of Fred Bailey free throws with just less than three minutes to play, and Trevecca took the win, 99-66.
THE TEAM
Trevecca made 45.9 percent (34-of-74) from the floor, including 15 of 39 (38.5%) from beyond the arc. At the foul line, Trevecca was 16-for-18 (88.9%). Trevecca out-rebounded Oakwood 55-40, and the Trojans also led the battle of the benches 49-25, they led 26-14 on the fast break, and 19-16 off-turnovers.
THE PLAYERS
Five Trojans scored in double figures led by Da'Shon Fisher's 20-point effort. Fred Bailey and Brett Wright each tallied 14 points in the win, Latham Binkley chipped in 11, and Jax Abernathy netted 10. Bailey added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, and he dished out five assists, and Fisher swiped the ball three times.
