NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's volleyball team (21-8, 15-5 GSC) wrapped up the 2025 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a difficult challenge. The Trojans hosted the 22nd-Ranked Argonauts of the University of West Florida Argonauts (25-5, 18-2 GSC) who had wrapped up the 2025 Gulf South Conference regular season title on Friday evening with a victory. The Trojans fought hard, and they had their opportunities, but in the end, UWF played just a little bit better, and the Argonauts won the match in four sets.
SERIES HISTORY
West Florida's win kept the Argonauts unbeaten in series history, though for the third time in the four meetings, Trevecca took a set off UWF.
MATCH RECAP
The first set was close throughout the early portions of play. The Argonauts built a small lead of 9-6, but the Trojans were able to bounce back. After Trevecca closed the gap to 13-11, the key stretch of the stanza saw the Trojans tally five straight points and take the lead 16-13. Another 3-point spurt moments later helped Trevecca open their lead to 20-16, and the Trojans hung on to take the set 25-23.
Trevecca held close throughout the early parts of the second frame, but this time the Argonauts put together the run to take control of the set. With the Argonauts leading 13-11, UWF finished the set on a 12-4 run to take the set 25-15 and square the match.
Both teams knew that the third set was crucial, and they played it into a classic duel. Trevecca inched their way out to an early 5-3 lead, but UWF stayed right with the Trojans into the middle stages of the stanza. UWF ran off a quick 4-0 spurt to take a 15-13 lead, but the Trojans answered with their own 4-0 run thanks to kills from Katilyn Grant, Mackenzie Martin, Reese Payne, and Addison Cunnagin that gave Trevecca the 17-15 lead. UWF took nine of the next 13 points to earn the first set point chance, but Trevecca answered with three straight points to tie the score and send it to beyond the scheduled distance.
UWF earned their fourth set point chance by winning the next point, but Grant and Martin had scoring swings to give the Trojans a 26-25 lead. The next two points were split, with each team scoring on a block at the net, but the Trojans were unable to cash in their second set point chance either. Martin had a kill that gave Trevecca a third set-point opportunity, but UWF finished the set off by winning four of the next five points to take a 31-29 set victory.
That third set comeback took a lot out of the Trojans, but the Trojans continued to fight hard. Trevecca opened an early 6-4 lead, and later in the set, a kill from Cunnagin gave the Trojans a 12-9 lead, but that is when the previous set seemed to catch up with Trevecca. UWF scored five straight points to take a 14-12 lead, and while Trevecca did tie the score at 14, another 4-0 spurt helped UWF take an 18-14 lead, and they led for the rest of the afternoon. Trevecca mounted one final charge late in the set to cut the deficit to 24-21, but UWF won the final point to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
He loss did drop Trevecca back into a tie for second place in the GSC with the University of Alabama in Huntsville, but the Trojans hold the tiebreaker, having won four of the seven sets played between the teams this season. That means Trevecca not only will not have to play on Tuesday night in the opening round of the GSC Championship, but they also do not have to play Friday night. The Trojans will have to wait and see who they will play in the semifinal round on Saturday, November 22. The GSC will be announcing the bracket for the Championship later in the weekend.
