VOLLEYBALL: Four-Set win over MC Keeps Trojans Unblemished in GSC Play

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (12-3, 6-0 GSC) overcame a sluggish first set to continue a solid start to the Gulf South Conference season with a four-set win over Mississippi College (7-8, 4-1 GSC). Trevecca dropped the first set, but the Trojans rallied to win the next three in succession, taking the win 17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-14.

The Trojans are on a seven-match win streak and have won 10 of their last 11 matches.

Series History
With the win, the Trojans leveled the all-time series with the Choctaws at 2-2. Trevecca has won both of the all-time meetings in Nashville.

Match Recap
The teams played close through the opening portions of the first set before a quick four point burst helped Mississippi College open a 12-8 lead on their way to the opening stanza win, 25-17.

A similar 6-1 run in the middle of the second set allowed Trevecca to seize the momentum and build a 13-9 lead. Trevecca slowly pulled away down the stretch of the frame, and the Trojans squared the match with a 25-18 set victory.

In the third set, Trevecca held the lead for much of the frame, and late in the frame, the Trojans led 21-16. Mississippi College battled back to within one twice, but kills from McKenzie Martin and Addison Cunnagin helped Trevecca hang on, and that momentum built into the fourth stanza.

In the decisive frame, Trevecca attacked the ball at a blistering .588 clip, as they pounded 12 kills on only 17 attacks, and the Trojans also pelted six service aces and notched three blocks on their way to the set win, 25-14, to complete the four-set match victory.

UP NEXT
Next, the Trojans hit the road for two matches, first a second meeting with the Union University Bulldogs (2-9, 0-4 GSC) at Fred Delay Gym in Jackson (10/7 – 6 PM). The Trojans swept Union to open the GSC season on Sept. 23 at Trojan Fieldhouse. The Trojans are 7-4 against the Union Bulldogs in the NCAA era.

Then, the Trojans visit Alabama again, this time in Montgomery against the AUM Warhawks (1-12, 0-4 GSC) in the AUM Athletics Complex (10/11 – 2 PM). The Warhawks and Trojans each won on their homecourt last year, the only two meetings in volleyball for the two schools.

The first meeting of the year with Christian Brothers University (7-9, 2-3 GSC) follows at Trojan Fieldhouse on October 14 at 6 PM. The Bucs own the NCAA D2 era series 5-4. Each team won on the other teams home court last year. TNU has won three of the last four meetings in the series.

The longest road trip of the year comes next. First, a trip to Valdosta State University (4-10, 3-2 GSC) at 5 PM on Oct. 17. The Blazers won both meetings last season. Those are the only two meetings in the series.

The next day, Oct. 18, the Trojans play at preseason favorite University of West Florida (12-3, 5-0 GSC) at 2 PM. The Argonauts swept the Trojans last year in what are the only two meetings between the two schools in volleyball.
