Trevecca Volleyball | UAH Takes Down Trojans; Montevallo Visits Saturday for Alumni Day

NASHVILLEThe Trevecca Nazarene volleyball team (16-6, 10-3 GSC) opened their Alumni Weekend on Friday night with an opportunity to officially punch their ticket to the postseason with a win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville (16-4, 8-2 GSC) Chargers. The Trojans started quickly, but struggled after dropping a tightly contested second set, and they fell in the match 3-1.

SERIES HISTORY
The loss drops Trevecca's record to 3-14 against UAH in the NCAA era, and it splits the season series at one match apiece. The Trojans do retain the inside track in a potential tiebreak with the Chargers, however, as the Trojans swept UAH in Huntsville earlier this year, so Trevecca holds a 4-3 edge in sets won head-to-head.

MATCH RECAP
Long runs were the story of the opening set. Trailing 4-3, Trevecca put together a 7-1 run that included five kills and a pair of aces from Addison Cunnagin to take the lead 10-5. After a 6-0 UAH run briefly gave the Chargers the lead back, the Trojans used an 8-1 run to take command with a 17-12 lead. UAH closed the gap to 19-16, but the Trojans took the final six points of set one - their third run of the set of at least 6-0 - to claim the set victory 25-16 and take the early 1-0 lead.

Trevecca opened set two with a 5-2 run, but UAH stayed close. The Chargers battled back and had closed the gap to 8-7, when kills from Cunnagin and Kayla Bullard helped Trevecca grab a little breathing room with an 11-7 lead. UAH, however, methodically worked their way back into the set, and the Chargers knotted the score at 22. The teams split the next four points before UAH took the final two points of the set to take the set 26-24 and level the match at 1-1.

After an intermission where the Trojans honored the 2015 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship team, The Trojans struggled defensively, and the Chargers took advantage. Trevecca had a hard time passing the ball, and UAH blocked very well in the set, as the Chargers took a 25-15 set win to take the 2-1 lead in the match.

Trevecca took the early lead twice in set four, but each time UAH battled back both times. TNU led 7-4 early, but UAH scored three points in a row to knot things at seven apiece. After a Trevecca timeout, the Trojans again pushed the lead out to 14-11, but UAH again answered to level things and force another Trevecca time out. This time, though, the Chargers pushed ahead and built a 19-15 lead before a trio of Trevecca tallies forced UAH to take their first timeout of the set with the Trojans trailing 19-18. Trevecca scored the next two points out of the timeout to take a 20-19 lead, but UAH responded with a 5-1 run to earn a match point opportunity up 24-21. Trevecca fought off that match point chance and forced the final UAH timeout of the set. Needing two points to square the set, Trevecca got back-to-back kills from Emma Schnitzer and Cunnagin to tie things up at 24 and force extra points for the second time in the match. For the second time, though, it was UAH that took advantage, as they took the set 27-25 and the match 3-1.

TROJAN HIGHLIGHTS UP NEXT
Trevecca will be back on the court in less than 24 hours, when they host the Falcons of the University of Montevallo (9-13, 6-6 GSC) on Alumni Day at 3 p.m. The Trojans won the earlier meeting between the two teams in Montevallo, 3-1.
