NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (4-10, 1-7 GSC) dropped a game to Delta State University (9-6, 5-4 GSC) 62-51 in Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday evening.
THE SERIES
Trevecca and Delta State met for the first time in women's basketball.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans scored a bucket in each of the opening three minutes to control a quick 7-0 lead. Delta State responded with a 9-1 run to capture a 9-8 lead over the next two minutes. After
Cheyenne Trotter nailed a couple of free-throws to push ahead 10-9, the final eight points of the quarter belonged to the Lady Statesmen who took a 17-10 advantage into the second.
Tatum Shaw opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer but six straight points by DSU from there gave the visitors a 23-13 lead. Trevecca sliced into the deficit over the next minute, using a 5-0 run to make it a 23-18 game with just over five minutes to play in the half. Down the stretch, both sides traded baskets as Delta State commanded a 28-22 halftime lead.
The Trojans opened the third quarter on fire.
Amaya Thomas scored five of Trevecca's seven points to give TNU a 29-28 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers from DSU made it a 34-29 game. Some full court pressure got the Trojans some extra possessions and tied things at 35-35.
Jayda Woods poured in nine of her 12 points in the third, but it was not enough as DSU held a 45-39 lead after three.
Delta State put things out of reach with a hot start to the fourth. The Lady Statesmen scored the first nine points of the frame and led by as many as 15 points (56-41 with 3:44 to play). Trevecca lost its fourth straight by giving up 17 points in three of the four quarters tonight.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 33.3% from the field. The Trojans were 5-21 (23.8%) from deep and shot 16-21 (76.2%) at the free-throw line. Delta State won the battle of the boards, 34-22. The Lady Statesmen dished out more assists, 12-9 while the Trojans produced more steals, 8-2 and blocks, 7-1.
THE PLAYERS
Amaya Thomas guided the Trojans with 15 points and three rebounds while
Jayda Woods added 12 points with four steals.
Tatum Shaw finished with five points, four assists and three rebounds.

Originally, the Trojans were scheduled to take on Mississippi College (9-6, 5-4 GSC) on Saturday, January 11.
Due to the coming winter weather in the Nashville-area, the game with Choctaws in Trojan Fieldhouse has been postponed. Trevecca and Mississippi College have never met in women's basketball. Check social media for the latest updates on when the contest against MC will be played.
