Trevecca Softball | No. 21 Trojans Dismantle Lakers, Punch Ticket to Midwest Regional Championship Game Saturday

NASHVILLE – The #21 Trevecca Nazarene University softball team (45-13) continued the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament with a win over Grand Valley State University (36-17) 3-2 at the Trevecca Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

With the win, the Trojans evened the all-time series at 4-4 with the Lakers. Trevecca and Grand Valley played for the fourth time in postseason history as well with the Trojans picking up their second win over the Lakers. GVSU won two of the three games in the 2016 Midwest Regionals to end Trevecca's season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

TNU 3, GVSU 2

The Trojans left two runners on in the top of the first as Kendall Andrews hit a double followed by Ashlan Sensing who was hit by the pitch. Sensing rebounded for a 1-2-3 bottom of the first though, collecting outs in three different ways. Three of the game's five runs were scored in the second as Sydney McCormick led the frame off with a solo home run to left field. With two outs and the bases loaded, a fielding error allowed both GVSU runs to score and give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Both sides sent one over the minimum to the plate in the third.

Both sides went quietly and quickly in the fourth before the Trojans finished the scoring in the fifth. With two outs, Anna Bennett doubled to right center field and scored when Kendall Andrews sent a ball to right for a single. Andrews stole second and then advanced to third off a throwing error. Ashlan Sensing poked a ball to left field to bring in Andrews for the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run. GVSU threatened with a one-out single in the seventh before Sensing slammed the door and put the Trojans into the championship game on Saturday with back-to-back strikeouts.
