CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (17-9, 13-6 G-MAC) fell to Thomas More University (16-10, 12-7 G-MAC), 77-61, on Thursday evening in the Connor Convocation Center.
The Saints even the all-time series at a game apiece after Trevecca beat TMU 84-70 earlier this season in the first ever meeting in women's basketball.
BREAKING IT DOWN
The Saints and Trojans played a fairly loose, up and down game in the opening 10 minutes. Just two fouls, both called against Thomas More, allowed for quick action allowing both sides to settle into their offense. The Saints connected on three 3-pointers in the frame and were leading 15-8 with 2:47 to play until Amaya Thomas scored Trevecca's final five points to close the gap to two.
Held scoreless in the first quarter, Faith Wilken promptly got in the scorebook with consecutive 3-pointers to give Trevecca its first lead of the frame, 19-17. Thomas More strung together 11 straight points from there, though and controlled a 28-19 advantage. Dwon the stretch of the half, the Trojans closed the deficit to as little as six (30-24) with 3:42 to play, but the Saints made three 3-pointers to ballon the lead back to 13. Much like the first quarter, the Trojans scored the final five points of the quarter to make it a 39-31 game at halftime.
The third quarter began with a 13-2 run for the Saints who did not look back from 52-34 lead with five minutes to play in the quarter. Trevecca got six points from Keeley Carter in the quarter, but it wasn't enough to bring the Trojans any closer to 10 as they went into the fourth trailing 58-46.
The Saints buried the Trojans early in the fourth quarter with some more quality 3-point shooting as the hosts held on for the 77-61 victory.
KEY PLAYERS
Keeley Carter just missed a double-double with a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds to go with three assists. Konnor Gambrell produced 14 points in support while Amaya Thomas finished with 11 and Faith Wilken had 10 points to round out the double digit scoring.
TEAM TIME
Trevecca shot 36.5% from the field and 4-18 (22.2%) from deep. The Trojans shot 11-15 (73.3%) at the free-throw line. Both sides pulled down 40 rebounds, but it was the Saints who gathered more steals (6-5), blocks (5-4) and assists (14-8).
