NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (13-15, 10-7 GSC) picked up a huge sweep of Lee University (16-13, 10-7 GSC) in a key GSC battle in Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday night.
The Trojans swept past the Flames in three sets, winning, 25-20, 25-18, 26-24.
THE SERIES
Trevecca and Lee have played 46 times with the Flames leading the series 36-10.
Lee holds a 6-3 advantage in Div. II era with both sides splitting the season series. The Trojans fell 3-2 on October 10 in Cleveland, Tenn.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After an attack error by
Emma Titus spotted the Flames the opening point, the Trojans quickly pounced. Trevecca took five of the next six points to lead 5-2 and did not look back from there. A service ace from
Reese Payne gave Trevecca its largest lead of the opener at 22-14. Lee did not surrender without a fight, though. After the Flames pulled within four at 24-20, the Trojans took the first, 25-20, behind a Lee service error.
It was all Lee to begin the second set as the visitors raced out to a quick 5-1 advantage. Back-to-back service aces from
Lily Vanbebber helped dig the Trojans out of their hole and made it a 6-5 game. Another service ace, this time from
Isabella Sherrod, tied things at 8-8. The Trojans trailed 13-11 before going on a 6-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. After a Flame kill, the Trojans rattled off the next four points to lead, 20-14 which was part of a 10-1 extended run. Consecutive kills by
Emma Titus closed things out in the second, for a 25-18 Trevecca win.
The Trojans took the first six points of the set establishing the tone of the third. After Lee used one of their timeouts at 5-0, the Trojans took the next point before the Flames got on the board behind an attack error. Two kills and two attack errors later, Trevecca held a 10-1 lead. The Flames cut the deficit to six before a service ace from
Reese Payne gave the Trojans a 19-9 lead. The Trojans earned their first set point of the night with a kill by
Elizabeth Wells at 24-16. Things changed from there, though. The visitors rallied for eight straight points and extended the set at 24-24. The rally was thwarted, however, by a pair of attack errors to give the Trojans the set and match, 26-24.
