NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (2-4, 0-1 GSC) began Gulf South Conference play with a loss against the University of Alabama-Huntsville (3-1, 1-0 GSC) 81-38 in Trojan Fieldhouse on Wednesday afternoon.
THE SERIES
Trevecca and Alabama-Huntsville have battled 13 times in the NCAA Div. II era. The Trojans lead the all-time series 9-4 having beaten the Chargers in Huntsville in the only game played last season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans offensively got off to a slow start, staring at a 13-4 deficit at the first media timeout. The lopsided first quarter ended, 20-8 in favor of UAH who was hitting at a 42.1% clip while the Trojans made just three of their 12 field goals in the period.
After 10 minutes, Trevecca was still searching for its first 3-pointer which came with the first basket of the second.
Brianna Burgess connected from deep to make it a 20-11 game. Not much else went the Trojans' way in the frame, though, as a 17-0 run by UAH, which spanned over five minutes, really put things out of reach. With 1:12 to play in the half,
Tatum Shaw hit a 3-pointer to stop the run, and the Trojans trailed 44-18 at the break.
The third period mirrored the first in terms of offensive production for both sides. UAH outscored the Trojans, 20-9 to take a 64-27 lead into the fourth.
The first two baskets went the Trojans way to start the fourth which was the closet contested of the day. Trevecca scored a game-high 11 points in the frame led by
Dayonna Perryman's three points. UAH held on for an 81-38 victory in the end.
