NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (0-0) won its ninth straight Homecoming exhibition game against Bryan College (1-2) on Saturday before an enthusiastic home crowd in Trojan Fieldhouse.
THE SERIES
Since the 2012-13 season, the Trojans are 11-1 in Homecoming exhibitions games having played 10 different opponents in that span.
Despite exhibition games not officially counting, the Trojans last played Bryan in the 2009-10 season in which they came away with the 65-47 win. Trevecca leads the all-time official regular season series with the Lions, 7-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Trojans scored the first five points of the season behind baskets from
Amaya Thomas and
Cheyenne Trotter. Thomas added a free throw before the Lions strung together back-to-back buckets. Once
Tatum Shaw scored four quick points, Bryan's second made 3-pointer of the quarter gave the visitors a 10-9 lead. Trevecca scored the final four points of the frame to take a 13-10 lead into the second.
Scoring was at a premium for both sides in the second, as the Trojans built out as much as a seven-point advantage with three minutes to play in the half, 20-13. Bryan added two baskets and the Trojans' two free throws for a 22-17 lead at halftime.
The Trojans scored a game-high 17 points in the third as seven different players found the bottom of the net. The largest lead of the third came when
Jenissa Varela connected for a 3-pointer to end the frame at 39-31.
Brianna Burgess opened the fourth quarter with a layup to give Trevecca a ten point cushion. Consecutive 3-pointers by the Lions made it a 46-44 game with just 3:33 to play but the Trojans held on for the 55-46 win by outscoring Bryan 9-2 down the stretch.
THE TEAM
Trevecca shot 37.9% from the field and were 4-20 (20.0%) from deep. The Trojans shot 7-13 (53.8%) at the free-throw line. Trevecca grabbed four more rebounds than Byran 42-38 with nearly double the assists, 13-7 and one more block, 3-2.
THE PLAYERS
Amaya Thomas scored a team-high 14 points with seven rebounds and three steals.
Cheyenne Trotter added 10 points and tied Thomas with a team-most seven rebounds. Janissa Varela scored eight points with four rebounds and three assists.
UP NEXT
The Trojans finish up their pre-season with another exhibition game against Fisk University (0-1) on Monday, November 4 in Trojan Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. with the Bulldogs.
The Trojans have beaten the Bulldogs in the previous two seasons' Homecoming exhibitions. The two sides have not played a regular season contest since the 2016-17 season, a 65-58 victory for the Trojans. Trevecca leads the all-time official regular season series with Fisk, 5-0.
