Trevecca Volleyball | #25 Argos Handle Trojans; TNU Hosts Union in GSC Opening Round Tuesday

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (13-18, 10-10 GSC) lost their final regular season match, 3-0 (13-25, 23-25, 17-25) in their first Gulf South season at conference champion No. 25 University of West Florida (25-5, 20-0 GSC) at the UWF Fieldhouse.


The Trojans are the sixth seed in the 2024 Gulf South Conference Championships and host an opening round match in Trojan Fieldhouse on November 19 at 6:00 PM. The Trojans face seventh-seed Union University (10-19, 8-12 GSC). Trevecca won both meetings with the Union Bulldogs during the season. In fact, Trevecca's first GSC game was a win in Jackson over the Bulldogs.

The winner advancing to the second round hosted by top-seed and No. 25 University of West Florida.

 

Trevecca's first Gulf South volleyball match came against the Bulldogs in Fred Delay Gymnasium on the Union campus in Jackson, Tenn. The meeting turned into the Trojans first GSC win, coming in four sets.

 

The top-seeded Argos ran the table in the league and are hosting the GSC Championships for the 14th time. Trevecca, who took the Argos to four sets in the first meeting in the Trojan Fieldhouse on Oct. 19, are just one of four GSC teams to take a set from the Argos. 

 

No GSC team took the Argos to five sets, and they had 3-0 sweeps in their final nine league matches. Additionally, they produced 3-0 sweeps in 15 of their 20 conference matches. They head into the GSC Championships having won 28 consecutive sets. 

 

The Trojans were picked sixth in the preseason poll and finished their first GSC regular season race in sixth.


THE SERIES
The Argos have won both meetings in the all-time series, sweeping the season series.


HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening set the Argos jumped out to a 7-1 lead and were in control throughout the set, leading 17-5. Trevecca made adjustments late, pulling to within 23-13 with a 8-6 run.

 

Trevecca started the second set with a 6-2 lead. UWF used a 3-0 run to take their first lead at 13-12. Trevecca regained the lead at 14-13, but the Argos pushed ahead 23-18. The Trojans used a 5-1 run, fighting off three set points, to pull to within 24-23. UWF took the set on the fourth try.

 

The Argos didn't flinch, starting the third set up 11-1. Down 16-5, the Trojans responded with an 8-3 run to pull to within six (19-13). The Argos slowed the Trojans and took the final set 25-17 for the sweep.


THE TEAM
The Argos hit .185, .293, and .367 in the three sets. Trevecca hit .000, .289, and .148 in their three sets. For the match, the Trojans hit .156 and the Argos hit .286.


THE PLAYERS

Emma Titus led the team with eight kills while Addison Cunnigan and Elizabeth Wells each added seven kills. Skias Hainline handed out 26 assists with eight digs. 
 

THE SEASON
Two Trojans surpassed the previous record for blocks in a season. Reese Payne broke her own record, 99, against Alabama Huntsville on October 25. She ends the season with 127 kills. Payne has 226 career blocks. MacKenzie O'Loughlin also broke the old mark and now has 112 blocks on the season. O'Loughlin has 206 career blocks.

 

On the NCAA era career blocks list, Payne is now fourth and O'Loughlin is seventh.

 

Elizabeth Wells, combined with her numbers at Terra State, has surpassed 1,000 career kills.

 

Maddie Wilds eclipsed the 1,000 career digs mark and now has 1,175. She also has 126 career service aces. Wilds is third on the Trevecca NCAA era service ace list. She is sixth on the career NCAA era list at Trevecca.

 

Emma Titus continues to add to her career statistics. Titus reached 1,123 career kills through the UWF game. She has 1,289 carer points, 600 digs, and 239 blocks. She is fourth on the NCAA era kills list. Titus has the fourth most points in Trevecca's NCAA era. Titus is third on the NCAA era blocks list.

 

Skias Hainline stepped up her game in her junior year, reaching 1,000 assists in the season and 1,255 for her career. This year she has 1,007 assists, 93 kills, 32 service aces, 275 digs, and 50 blocks. Hainline is now fourth on the Trevecca NCAA era career assists list.

 

Freshman Lily VanBebber leads the team with 36 services aces and has added 231 digs.

 

MacKenzie O'Loughlin earned one of the Gulf South Conference Player of the Week honors this year on September 24.
