NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (10-3, 5-0 Great Midwest) beat Malone University (8-6, 1-5, Great Midwest), 66-51, at Trojan Fieldhouse, on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Trevecca continues to be the only undefeated team in Great Midwest play.
Trevecca sweeps the season series, winning the first meeting at Malone on December 9th, 2023, 69-65. Malone has an overall 10-4 advantage in the series. It is the first season sweep for the Trojans in the series. The win in Canton earlier this season is the first road win, in eight games played in Canton, for TNU in the series.
BREAKING IT DOWN
The Pioneers opened the game with a 15-8 lead and looked to be in control. Trevecca roared back scoring 14 unanswered points for a 22-15 lead with 5:02 left in the half. The extended run, to the halftime break, was a 22-5 run that saw the Trojans push the lead to double digits, 30-20, at the half. Tommy Gankhuyag led the Trojans with 12 points, hitting 4-5 from beyond the three-point arc.
Trevecca led 32-22 with 18:48 left in the game and Malone cut the 10-point lead in half (34-29) with a 7-2 run. Trevecca countered, first with seven unanswered points to build their largest lead at 12 (41-29 / 13:59), then extended the run to build a 19 (50-31 / 10:17) point lead with a 16-2 spurt.
Jalen Page scored 11 of those 16 points.
Tommy Gankhuyag had the other five, including his fifth three-point field goal of the game. The closest the Pioneers could get was 13 the rest of the way. The largest Trojan lead was 21 (55-34) with 7:50 to play.
KEY PLAYERS
Tommy Gankhuyag led the team with a personal season high and team game high 21 points. The freshmen added six rebounds, two assists and two blocks while shooting 8-13 (71.4%) from the field and 5-7 from the charity stripe.
Jalen Page scored 20 and grabbed four rebounds with two assists and two steals.
Peter Lambesis contributed eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Jamal Cannady tied Gankhyag with a team-high six rebounds.
TEAM TIME
The Trojans shot 43.1% (25-58) from the field, 44.4% (12-27) from beyond the three-point line, and 50% (4-8) foul line.
The Pioneers out rebounded the Trojans 41-35, but the Trojans held the normally hot shooting Pioneers to just 32.8% (21-64) from the field, 18.2% (6-33) from three-point range, and 75% (3-4) from the foul line.
