Box Score NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (9-3, 4-0 Great Midwest) beat Great Midwest preseason favorite an nationally-ranked Ashland University (9-3, 3-2, Great Midwest), 82-71, at Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday night.
It was the first win for the Trojans in the series with the relatively new members of the Great Midwest. Ashland had won the previous four meetings in the series. Ashland is the defending regular season and tournament champions.
BREAKING IT DOWN
The Trojans led 6-4 on two early three-pointers from
Jalen Page and Tommy Gankhuyag. The game remained close though, but with Ashland up 14-12 (10:15), Trevecca went on an 10-0 run that put them up eight (22-14) with 7:57 left in the half. The Eagles scored five straight to cut the Trojan lead to four (22-18), but the Trojans responded with a 6-0 run, extending their lead to 10 (28-18) with 6:20 left. The Eagles fought back ending the first half only down five (33-28).
Ashland cut the Trojan lead to thee a couple of times early in the second half, but with TNU leading by four (38-34 / 16:51), three consecutive Trojan three-pointers, two from
Jalen Page and one from Peter Lambesis, set Trevecca off on a 9-0 run (47-34) that gave them their largest lead of the game to that point. Both teams battled for the next several minutes, but with 7:13 remaining the Trojan lead was just seven (53-60). Trevecca managed to expand the lead again, going on a 7-0 run, capped by a three-point bomb from
Lawrence Brazil III, with 5:19 left in the half. The Trojan lead was 14 (67-53), their largest of the game, and the Trojans stayed in control, finishing the game up 82-71.

The Trojans shot 43.1% (28-65) from the field and 81.3% (13-16) from the foul line. The Eagles out rebounded the Trojans 41-35. Trevecca dominated points scored off turnover – 30-12.
UP NEXT
The last game at the Trojan Fieldhouse before the Trevecca students and employees return from break, features a men's and women's double header with Malone University.
Likely the last time the Pioneers travel to Nashville before the Trojans head to the Gulf South Conference (
Gulf South press release) next season. The Malone men are 8-5 overall, but 1-4 in the Great Midwest. TNU beat the Pioneers 69-65 on Dec. 9 in Ohio. Malone did bounce back to beat Hillsdale College in their last conference tilt before losing to Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday. The Pioneer women are 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the league, coming off a loss at KWC.

Trevecca welcomes Hillsdale College next Thursday, Jan. 11 for a men's (8-4, 3-2 Great Midwest) and women's (5-7, 1-3 Great Midwest) double header starting at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM. Northwood University visits next Saturday, Jan. 13 for a men's (3-9, 0-4 Great Midwest) and women's (7-4, 3-1 Great Midwest) double header at 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
