NASHVILLE - The Trevecca Nazarene University volleyball team (4-8, 1-2 Great Midwest) won its first Great Midwest game of the year, coming from a set down to beat Tiffin University (5-4, 0-1 Great Midwest) at Trojan Fieldhouse on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons, playing their first G-MAC match of the year, came out strong in the first set, catching the Trojans off guard.
Maddie Wilds opened the set with an ace, but the Dragons scored the next four points and pulled ahead 8-2 with another 4-1 run. The Trojans were never able to close the gap and threaten the Dragons the rest of the way. Tiffin hit .385 in the set and had eight blocks.
Trevecca matched the 25-18 Tiffin win in set one with their own 25-18 win in set two. It started with a 4-1 Trojan lead. Tiffin used a 4-1 run to secure a 5-5 tie, but TNU turned the corner with an 17-11 lead and the Dragons didn't get within three the rest of the way.
Tiffin scored the first point of the third, but Trevecca jumped out to a 7-3 lead. Tiffin trailed the rest of the way, despite cutting the margin to one on a couple of occasions. Trevecca hit .344 in the set.
Emma Titus has six kills and hit .429.
Trevecca was ready to finish the match and jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth. Tiffin never cut into the lead significantly and the Trojans rolled to a 12-point win in the decisive match set.
TEAM REPORT
Trevecca hit .175 for the match and had seven service aces while producing 12 blocks. The Dragons, who lead the league in blocks, had 14 in the match. Tiffin only had three service aces after serving the ball well in the first set.
TROJAN PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS
Several Trojans shined, led by
Emma Titus and her 13 kills and .136 attack percentage. She added 10 digs for another double-double.
Reese Payne had 10 kills with a .421 attack percentage and chipped in three blocks.
Maddie Wilds just missed a double-double with nine kills and 10 digs. Wilds had three aces and two blocks. Catie Crutchfield had three aces and led the team with 18 digs. She also pitched in five assists.
Emma Titus had a big week for the Trojans. The junior hit .246 over the three matches with 63 total kills. She had 27 against Ohio Dominican, 23 vs Ashland, and 13 against Tiffin. She had a double-double in every match. She had 14 digs against Ashland and 10 against Ohio Dominican and Tiffin. She had a total of nine blocks and three service aces.
Over the last five matches, Titus has averaged 20.2 kills per match while hitting .241. She has 67 digs, 18 blocks, and five service aces. She's had a double-double in all five matches.
UP NEXT
Trevecca visits Thomas More University (1-8, 0-1 Great Midwest) on Tuesday. It is their first trip to play the Saints in Crestview Hills, Ky. TMU is in their first year in the Great Midwest and are recent addition to NCAA Division II athletics. It is the first meeting in volleyball between Trevecca and Thomas More.
