Box Score ASHLAND, Ohio. – The No. 5 seeded Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (22-10) traveled to Ashland for the 2023 NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Tournament Semifinal matchup against No. 1 seed Ashland University (33-0) and fell 73-49, which brings the Trojan's season to a close.
THE SERIES
The Eagles have not lost to the Trojans and are 5-0 vs. Trevecca. The Eagles defeated the Trojans in the Great Midwest Championship Game on March 4, 83-65.
THE FLOW
The Trojans struck first when Keeley Carter hit a three-point basket 37 seconds into the game. The Trojans led more than 19 minutes of the first half. Ashland did take a 6-5, but the Trojans stayed hot as they finished the first quarter on a 10-2 run. The run started with a Bayleigh Carmichel three and ended with a Julie Luna three, putting the Trojans up 15-8.
Trevecca led 18-11 with 8:13 to go in the half after Keeley Carter hit one of her three baskets from beyond the three-point arc. No. 1 and undefeated Ashland flipped a switch and cut the Trojan's lead to one at 18-17 with 6:30 left in the half. Trevecca responded with a pair of layups from Julie Luna and Bayleigh Carmichel to extend the lead back to five (22-17). Ashland matched the Trojan's scoring and tied the game at 22-22. Kor Fornesa Liu put the Trojans up 24-22 on a field goal with 2:45 on the clock. Neither team scored for nearly two minutes. Ashland tied the game again with :47 to go in the half, then Maddie Maloney hit a three-pointer with a second on the clock for a 27-24 lead at the break.
Keeley Carter made a free to begin the second half and the Trojans were within two. Ashland quickly turned the momentum back in their favor with a 23-8 run to close the quarter. The Eagles led 50-35 at the break.
In the fourth, the Trojans gained some ground early with an Emma Palmer basket and a Keeley Carter three and field goal. The 7-3 run pulled the Trojans to within 13 (55-42) with 5:36 left. Ashland surged again and eventually settled for a 73-49 win.
THE PLAYERS
Keeley Carter led the Trojans with 16 points and nine rebounds. Julie Luna had nine points, and Bayleigh Carmichel had eight points.
THE TEAMS
The Trojans shot 32.2% (19-59) from the floor, 26.9% (7-26) from three-point range, and 50% (4-8) from the free-throw line. The Trojans outrebounded Ashland 39-34.
