NASHVILLE - The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (2-1) won a hope non-conference game against Tennessee Wesleyan University (1-4), 76-69. The game was tight throughout, with the Trojans gaining the win with a late run.
BREAKING IT DOWN
Neither team held more than a four point advantage in the first half. The Bulldogs started the game on a 4-0 run and led 6-2 when the Trojan offense kicked in. Trevecca took a 10-8 lead with a 8-2 run. Trevecca took a four point lead, 16-12, with 13:48 left in the half. The Bulldogs did not tuck and run, they countered with a 5-0 spurt to regain the lead. Trevecca regained a four point lead (30-26) with 5:37 to go in the half and looked to be setting up a run to the half, but TWU used a 10-2 run to take a four-point lead with 1:05 left in the half. Trevecca closed the half on a 4-0 run for a 36-36 score at the intermission.
The second half was similar to the first with both teams holding a modest lead. The Bulldogs took a three-point lead (51-48), but Trevecca hit back to back threes from Drew Blackston and Pete Lambesis to take a three-point lead of their own, 54-51 with 10:29 remaining. The Bulldogs pulled ahead 56-55 with 9:01 left, that's when the Trojans finally built some separation. Trevecca had a 12-4 run that gave them their largest lead of the game at 67-60 with 5:55 left. Drew Blackston made it and eight point lead (70-62) with a three pointer at the 5:04 mark. The Bulldogs could get no closer and the Trojans won 76-69.
KEY PLAYERS
Jamal Cannady recorded a career-high 28 points with five assists and three steals to lead his team. Cannady went 4-of-8 from the three-point line, 8-10 from the foul line, and 8-16 from the field. Pete Lambesis Jr recorded 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Lambesis added two steals and was 3-4 from the foul line. Drew Blackston scored 12 points and added three assists. Blackston was 4-9 from the three-point line. Lawrence Brazil III and Jalen Page added nine points. Page had five rebounds and five assists.
TEAM TIME
The game was tied 36-36 at the half and the Trojans outscored the Bulldogs 40-33 in the second half.
The Trojans shot 38.3% (23-60) from the field, 32.5% (13-40) from deep, and 77.3% (17-22) from the foul line. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Trojans 39-34 and had 18 turnovers to TNU's 11. Trevecca turned Tennessee Wesleyan turnovers into 14 points.
UP NEXT
On Saturday, November 18th at 3:00 PM., the Trojans travel to play Gulf South Conference member Christian Brothers University in Memphis. The Trojans play another GSC member, Shorter University, on Tuesday, November 21 at 6:30 PM in Rome, Georgia.
The first Great Midwest conference game is Tuesday, November 28 when the University of Findlay visits at 7:30 PM. After a Great Midwest road game at Northwood University on Saturday, December 2 at 1:00 PM, the Trojans host Christian Brothers University for a special Christmas and Finals celebration at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 2.
