Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (1-18, 0-13 Great Midwest) dropped a 73-49 league game to Walsh University (13-7, 10-3 Great Midwest) on Saturday afternoon in the Cecchini Center.
THE SERIES
With the win, Walsh grabs its 10th all-time victory versus Trevecca and claims the season series. The Cavaliers also defeated the Trojans 71-54 on January 7 in Nashville and lead 10-2 in all games since Walsh joined the Great Midwest.
THE FLOW
Scoring was at a premium in the first five minutes of play. The Cavaliers opened by hitting a 3-pointer before the Trojans collected their first six points to lead 6-3 with 14:55 to play. Walsh sank another 3-pointer to tie the game before both teams' offenses settled in. Nearly three minutes later the Cavaliers lead stretched to six after consecutive 3-pointers gave the hosts a 14-8 advantage with 12:12 left in the half. Over the next four minutes the Trojans tried to cut into the Walsh lead, trimming the deficit down to five at 24-19 at the 7:52 mark. In all, the Cavaliers sank 11 3-pointers in the first half to lead 44-28 at the break.
The second half saw the Cavaliers cool off significantly from downtown. In the opening 10 minutes of the half Walsh connected for only one made 3-pointer but the hosts lead grew to 57-37 with 10:12 to play. Down the stretch the Trojans could not cut into the Walsh lead much, coming as close as the halftime deficit of 18 after consecutive treys by both Gus Davenport and Josh Goings. In the end, Walsh held on for the 73-49 victory.
THE PLAYERS
Caleb Terry was a rebound shy of the double-double with a team-high 13 points and nine rebounds. Terry added an assist and a block to his night as well. Gus Davenport finished with nine points and eight rebounds on 4-of-7 shooting.
THE TEAMS
The Trojans shot 43.5% (20-46) from the floor, 32.0% (8-25) from three-point range, and made one of their two free throws. The Trojans outrebounded Walsh 30-25 but trailed 14-13 in assists and 12-2 in steals.
UP NEXT
The Trojans return home to begin a five-game homestand on January 31 when Kentucky Wesleyan (9-11, 5-7 Great Midwest) makes a trip to Trojan Fieldhouse at 7:30 p.m.
