Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Rally Over Hillsdale Capped with Last Second Shot

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (13-6, 9-3 Great Midwest) defeated visiting Hillsdale College (12-9, 5-6 Great Midwest) 56-54 in Trojan Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. The win extends the Trojan's winning streak to seven consecutive games. It is the longest win streak since the 2014-15 team won 10 in a row to close the regular season. The team hits 13 overall wins, the most in a season since the 2014-15 team went 17-10. The nine (9) conference wins are the most in a season since the 2018-19 team went 11-11 in league play.  

THE SERIES

The Trojan's win ends the Charger's five-game winning streak in the series. The Trojans trail 4-7 in the all-time series. The Chargers won the first meeting this season, 70-55, at Hillsdale on December 3. The last Trojan win prior to tonight was a 64-54 victory at Hillsdale on Jan. 18, 2020. The Trojans are now 3-3 at home versus the Chargers. Hillsdale had won the last three meetings in Trojan Fieldhouse. The last home win vs Hillsdale was an 69-62 win on January 26, 2019.

THE FLOW

The first quarter was a low-scoring affair with neither team having more than a three-point edge. Hillsdale scored the final basket of the first quarter to time the game 11-11 heading to the second quarter.

The Chargers added eight straight points to start the second quarter, giving them a 10-0 run and a 19-11 lead. They held a 10-point edge at the half (26-16). Hillsdale outscored Trevecca 15-5 in the quarter. 

In the third quarter, the Trojans chipped away at the deficit with a 7-1 run capped off by a Lili Wilken three-pointer to make it 33-27 with 5:12 left in the third. However, Hillsdale closed the quarter on an 11-4 run to build a game-high 13-point (44-31) lead going to the fourth quarter.

The Trojans came alive in the fourth quarter. After trading baskets and still down 13 (46-33), the Trojans ripped off a 14-3 run, led by eight Emma Palmer points, pulling the Trojans within two (49-47) with 3:54 left in the game. After Hillsdale's Caitlin Splain hit a three to put the Chargers up five (52-47), Emma Palmer connected again to give her 10 points in the quarter, setting up Lili Wilken to tie the game 52-52 on a three-pointer with 1:29 to go. With 26 seconds left, Keeley Carter put the Trojans up for the first time since they led 11-9 in the first quarter. With 16 seconds left, Sydney Mills scored to tie the game at 54-54. Then Keeley Carter scored on a driving layup with just .08 seconds left, giving the Trojans a 56-54 lead. Hillsdale threw the ball away on the inbound and Trevecca held on for the come-from-behind win.

THE PLAYERS

Emma Palmer led the Trojans with 14 points and a pair of rebounds. Faith Wilken had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Keeley Carter added 12 points. Lili Wilken added 10 points. Bayleigh Carmichel added eight rebounds.

THE TEAMS

Trevecca outscored the Chargers 25-10 in the fourth quarter. Trevecca never led by more two points and only led for a total of 1:21 of the game.

The Trojans shot 44.1% (26-59) from the floor, 20% (4-20) from three-point range, and 0% (0-3) from the free-throw line. 

The Trojans outrebounded Hillsdale 45-22. One of TNU's biggest edges in the game was scoring in the paint where they had a 38-20 edge. Another was a 17-7 advantage in second-chance scoring. 

UP NEXT 

The Trojans hit the road for two games. They face Lake Erie College (6-10, 2-7 Great Midwest) on Thursday at 4:30 PM. The Trojans have a 7-1 advantage over Lake Erie and have won the last seven in a row.

On Saturday at 12:00 PM, the Trojans will take on Walsh University (7-10, 5-5 Great Midwest). The Trojans snapped Walsh's six-game win streak on January 7th with a 67-60 win at Trojan Fieldhouse.

Trevecca returns home with a four-game homestand. They host Kentucky Wesleyan on Tuesday, January 31. Then host Ohio Dominican on February 4. The final two regular season home games are the University of Findlay on Feb. 9 and Tiffin University on Feb. 11. 

The final two regular season games are at  Kentucky Wesleyan College on Feb. 16 and Ursuline College on Feb. 25. 

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championships are next. The top eight teams advance and the top four seeds host a quarterfinal game on February 28. The semifinals and finals are March 3-4 at the home court of the regular season champion.
