Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Hold On to Beat Conference Newcomer Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (4-3, 1-0 Great Midwest) traveled to Northwood University (2-5, 0-1 Great Midwest) on Thursday night and won 79-77 at Riepma Arena to open conference play.

THE SERIES

This was the first-ever meeting between the two teams, with the Trojans taking the first meeting.

THE FLOW

Northwood came out strong early on as they jumped to a 12-3 lead. The Trojans regrouped and finished the first quarter on an 8-3 run to close the gap down to 18-13. They continued that momentum into the second quarter as they continued to chip away at Northwood's lead with a 10-3 run to make it 28-25. Five Bayleigh Carmichel points highlighted the run. Both teams traded points as neither was able to gain the advantage, with the score being 39-34 Northwood at halftime.

The Trojans scored the first five points of the second half to tie the game at 39-39. Then for the entire third quarter, the lead switched four separate times before Northwood tied it up at 58-58 heading into the fourth quarter. The Trojans began the fourth quarter with a 7-2 run in which Bayleigh Carmichel made a three-pointer, and Emma Palmer scored on a layup to build their lead to 65-60 with 8:14 remaining. Northwood scored the next five to tie the game back up. The lead changed four times following the tie before Emma Palmer scored four points to build a 76-72 lead with 2:04 left. The Trojans would hold on to the lead and win 79-77.

THE PLAYERS

Four Trojans scored double-digit points, with Keeley Carter leading the Trojans with 21 points and nine rebounds with 8 assists, just shy of a triple-double. Emma Palmer had 19 points and 8 rebounds. Bayleigh Carmichel added 14 points and three rebounds. Kor Fornesa Liu had 10 points and three rebounds.

THE TEAMS

The Trojans shot 44.4% (28-63) from the floor, 38.9% (7-18) from three-point range, and 72.7% (16-22) from the free-throw line. The Trojans outrebounded Northwood 39-36 and dominated points in the pain 42-22.

The Trojans will finish the road swing at Hillsdale College (3-3) on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
