Trevecca Women's Basketball | Trojans Dowse Lee Flames; Face No. 4 Union after Thanksgiving

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (3-2) picked up a good win on the road, 67-52, at Lee University (3-2) on Tuesday at Paul Dana Walker Arena.

After playing six games in nine days over the last week plus, the Trojans played the Flames with two full days off.

THE SERIES

The win breaks a six-game win streak in the series for Lee and is the Trojan's first win over Lee in the NCAA Div. II era. The last win for the Trojans in the series came November 28, 2005, in a 71-57 win also at Paul Dana Walker Arena.

In the NAIA Era, the teams were even at 11-11. So, all-time, Lee now leads the series 15-12.

THE FLOW

Both teams got off to a good start, ending the first 10 minutes tied 16-16. Lee got off to a 7-0 start, but the Trojans hung tough and pulled to within one (8-7) with 5:55 left in the opening quarter. Trevecca tied it at 14-14 with 2:20 left in the quarter.

Trevecca never led in the first quarter, but Tatum Shaw's three-pointer just over a minute into the second quarter gave the Trojans a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game. That opening basket of the second quarter put the Trojans up 19-16 with 8:58 left in the half. The Trojans methodically pulled away and with 1:29 left in the quarter, Keeley Carter went to the line and hit a pair of free throws to put the Trojans up nine (31-22). TNU led at the half by eight (32-24) after outscoring the Flames 16-8 in the second frame.

Keeley Carter scored the first basket of the third quarter, giving the visitors a double-digit lead for the first time at 34-24. The Trojans pushed the lead to as high as 12 in the quarter, but the Flames cut the lead to seven (44-37) at the end of three.

It took nearly two minutes for either team to score in the fourth. The host Flames got a pair of free throws to cut the Trojan lead to five (44-39) with 8:18 to go. Trevecca rebuilt a double-digit lead (53-41), this time with a 9-2 run. The Trojans held a double-digit nearly the rest of the way before hitting their highest margin, 15, with a Lili Wilken three-pointer with four seconds remaining. Trevecca outscored Lee 23-15 in the fourth.

THE PLAYERS

Keeley Carter led the Trojans with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Carter hit 8-of-10 from the field and all four free throw attempts. Faith Wilkin added 16 points hitting 3-of-four from deep. Wilken added five rebounds.

THE TEAMS

The Trojans most significant advantage might have been from deep, hitting 10-of-25 (40%) while Lee hit just 4-of-29 (13.8%). The Trojans also capitalized on 16 Lee turnovers with a 15-10 advantage in points scored off of turnover. Lee had the edge in fastbreak scoring 17-2.

UP NEXT

The Trojans have the rest of Thanksgiving week off before visiting another former conference foe, No. 4/7 Union University (2-0), on Monday, November 28 at 6 PM. Against Union, the Trojans trail 6-36 in the series. The last meeting was on February 23, 2012. The last win for the Trojans was a 69-63 win in January of 2007. This is the first official meeting in the NCAA Division II era after the teams played for a couple of decades in the NAIA and the TranSouth Athletic Conference.
