Trevecca Women's Basketball | League-leading & No. 9 Cedarville Builds Third Quarter Run to Outscore Trojans

CEDARVILLE, OH - The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (3-4, 3-4 Great Midwest) surrendered a big third quarter run by the No. 9 Cedarville Yellow Jackets (17-2, 17-2 Great Midwest) and fell 82-75 on the road.

Cedarville – who currently sits at the top of the Great Midwest standings – completed the regular season sweep of the Trojans with the win, having defeated Trevecca 94-61 in the regular season opener for the Trojans.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

It was the eighteenth meeting between Trevecca and Cedarville, and the Trojans fell to 3-15 all-time.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams got off to a good start in the first quarter, with a back-and-forth that included Trevecca players like Faith Wilken, Keeley Carter, Olivia Pepperman, Samantha Whiteman, and Grace Baird all getting on the board. Trevecca trailed 20-18 at the end of the first quarter, and continued the form into the second. Cedarville opened the second quarter with a 5-0 spurt that gave the Yellow Jackets a 25-18 lead, but the Trojans worked their way back into it with a personal 4-0 run by Wilken. The Trojans would tie it up at 25, and again at 33 in the second quarter with Kaitlynn Wilks layups, but were unable to take the lead. Cedarville held a 37-35 advantage at the half.

Cedarville roared out of the locker room in the third quarter with an 18-5 run, and took control of the game. The Trojans trailed by 72-52 heading into the final frame of play, having been outscored 35-17. With three minutes to play, Trevecca trailed 80-66. The Trojans put together a 7-2 burst late in the game to bring the Cedarville lead back down to single digits with five of those points coming from Wilken, but ran out of time in the 82-75 loss.

PLAYER STATS REPORT

Two Trojans hit career highs, as Faith Wilken posted 21 points on 6 of 12 shooting, and Keeley Carter hit seven of 10 field goal attempts to score 20 points with her five rebounds. Kaitlynn Wilks was the third Trojan to hit double figures, scoring a season-high 13 points and six rebounds.

Ashlyn Huffman led the Yellow Jackets, with 21 points on seven of 12 shooting and nine rebounds. Emily Chapman scred 11 points and Paige Garr added 10.

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

Trevecca was 26-of-54 (48%) from the floor, and six of 21 (28.6%) from beyond the arc. The Trojans out-rebounded Cedarville 37-31, but turned the ball over 17 times while forcing 10 turnovers.

Cedarville was 29-of-66 (44%), and hit 12-of-35 three-pointers (34%), as well as 12-of-13 free throws in the win.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Cedarville game was the first of a three-game road trip for the Trojans. Trevecca will head to Tiffin on Saturday afternoon, and will travel to Lake Erie for a rematch against the Storm on February 15 before returning to Nashville to host Malone on February 18.
