THE SERIES
The two sides met just once during the COVID shortened spring season, the Panthers eliminated the Trojans from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament. With today's victory, Kentucky Wesleyan leads 15-5 all-time.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite a lackadaisical shooting effort (4-for-15) and playing with just nine players, the Trojans kept the first quarter competitive. Before the Panthers got their first basket, the Trojans created three straight turnovers on the defensive end limiting Kentucky Wesleyan's options. In fact, turnovers were the name of the game as a total of 13 were committed in the opening frame, eight by the Panthers, five for the Trojans. A late 3-pointer by Shelby Jane Petty brought the Trojans within five points as the first quarter ended 14-9 in favor of Kentucky Wesleyan.
In the second, back-to-back 3-pointers opened things for the Panthers, whose offense really started to unlock. Kentucky Wesleyan tripled their made field goals in the period, improving to 54% shooting from the field heading into halftime. The Trojans managed just eight points in the frame as the Panthers outscored them by 19 to hold a 41-17 halftime advantage.
A few quick points and stops by the Trojans out of halftime, cut it to a 41-21 game with 7:09 to play in the third, but that would be the closest Trevecca would come. The Panthers saw their lead expand to 58-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Trojans scored a game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter, as seven of the nine scored. In the end, the Panthers held on for a 77-37 victory.
PLAYER PERFORMANCE
Keeley Carter was the lone Trojan to reach double figures as the sophomore guard collected 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. Carter grabbed four rebounds and dished out an assist.
TEAM STATS
The Trojans shot 32% from the floor and 10% from range. The Trojans shot five times at the free-throw line (3-5) and were outrebounded 36-26. A total of 42 turnovers were caused, 23 for the Trojans and 19 by the Panthers.
UP NEXT
The Trojans earn nearly a full two-week break before quickly kicking off the 2022 portion of their schedule when they host conference rivals, Cedarville University (6-3, 2-2 Great Midwest) on New Year's Day. Tip-off against the Yellow Jackets is set for 2 p.m.
