THE SERIES
AUM takes a 4-1 advantage after five all-time meetings with the Trojans. The teams had not met since the 2019-20 campaign in which the Warhawks came away with a 58-53 victory in Montgomery, Alabama.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After scoring on their first two possessions and leading 4-2, the Warhawks played from behind for most of the rest of the contest. Despite the Trojans' stout effort on the defensive end, not allowing the Warhawks to penetrate into the lane, AUM trailed by only four after the first quarter. Emma Palmer contributed six of her 14 points in the first, helping the Trojans to an 18-14 lead.
In the second period, the Trojans would spread the wealth around getting six players at least a point. The Trojans extended their lead to as many as 13 after Grace Baird hit a 3-pointer with 2:28 to play in the half. The 3-pointer was crucial, however, as the Trojans would not score again in the period. A 6-0 run to close the final two minutes allowed Trevecca a 31-24 advantage at halftime.
In the third quarter, back-to-back baskets by Emma Palmer opened the Trojans' lead to 11, but a 12-2 response by the Warhawks pulled the visitors back within a possession at 39-36. The Trojans were forced to call for time. AUM regained the lead for the first time in 25 minutes when Derienne Black sank a pair of free throws with 2:54 to play. The Trojans regained their lead back heading into the fourth quarter, but the margin was slim, 46-44.
The final 10 minutes offered perhaps the most exciting moments of the contest. First, it was the Trojans who opened the first five minutes extending their lead to as many as seven (53-46) behind a corner 3-pointer from Bayleigh Carmichel a jumper from Faith Wilken. The Warhawks responded with a 5-0 run to once again pull back within a single possession to cut it to a 53-51 game with 3:33 to play. In the final minute, both squads had the ball with the chance to seal the game. Bayleigh Carmichel missed a 3-point opportunity while the Warhawks were sent to the free-throw line with 0.3 seconds remaining. A pair of made foul shots by Raquel Sampson finished the game off in regulation, 59-57.
PLAYER PERFORMANCE
A trio of Trojans touched double figures, but it was Emma Palmer who recorded a game-high 14 points to pair with six rebounds. Faith Wilkin recorded her second straight double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) while Alex McFarlin also had 10 points on 2-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc.
TEAM STATS
Despite shooting 40% (22-55) from the field, and winning the battle of the boards, 35-29, the difference came at the foul line. The Warhawks doubled up the Trojans at the charity stripe, shooting 14-20 while the Trojans sank 8-10.
