Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Move to 3-1 Behind Penha's 26 Points, 17 Rebounds

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (3-1) knocked off Shorter University (2-2) in the next to last non-conference game before the Trojans get into Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. Trevecca won 67-58 at the Trojan Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon. 

CJ Penha scored 26 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. It's the most rebounds for a Trojan since Matt Gamberoni collected 18. Gambo grabbed 18, also against Shorter, during the 2015-16 season.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES 

The Trojans lead the all-time series 7-2. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hawks scored first, and the game remained close throughout the first half. With 15:46 Shorter tied the game 8-8. The Trojans started gaining some separation with the Hawks, using a 9-2 run to build a 17-10 lead with 10:05 remaining in the half. The Hawks stayed in touch until the Trojans turned a 23-20 lead into a 30-20 lead. The Trojan lead reached 12 (34-22) just before half, and Trevecca led 34-23 at the half. 

The TNU lead remained near double figures early in the second half, but with 18:25 left in the game, the TNU lead was just eight (38-30). However, Trevecca scored the next seven points, and their lead grew to 15 (45-30) with 16:40 to go. The 7-0 run included a jumper by Josh Price, a dunk by CJ Penha, and a three by Chris Rogers

The Hawks were not grounded by the Trojan lead. Shorter closed the gap to just five points (52-47) with 8:24 left in the game on a 17-7 run. Trevecca quickly pushed the lead back to nine with four straight points on baskets by Penha and Price. The lead moderated the rest of the way slightly and the Trojans secured the win 67-58. 

PLAYER STATS BREAKDOWN

CJ Penha led the Trojans in scoring with 26 while Chris Rogers (18) and Josh Price (14) each hit double-figure scoring. Penha not only scored, but he also rebounded, grabbing 17 missed shots. 

Rogers hit four of eight from beyond the arc, and Penha shot 11-18 from the field. 

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

Trevecca outrebounded Shorter 46-37 and turned the ball over just nine times. 

Neither team set the house on fire with their shooting. Trevecca hit 36.9% (24-65) from the field and 25% (7-28) from deep. At the line, TNU hit 75% (12-16). Shorter shot 35.1% (20-57), 21.4% (3-14), and 68.2% (15-22). 

Trevecca dominated the game in the paint, outscoring the visitors 24-14. Second chance points might have been the special sauce for the Trojans; the edge was 20-2. Meaning the Trojans converted on almost every one of their 11 offensive rebounds. The Hawks dominated the bench scoring 23-0. All of Trevecca's points came from their five starters. 

UP NEXT

Trevecca heads to Carson-Newman University (1-3) on Tuesday to take on the Eagles in Jefferson City, Tennessee, at 4:30 PM. The last time the two schools played in men's basketball was 2013-14. The Eagles lead the series 7-2. The first meeting was during the 1979-80 season when both teams were in the NAIA and a part of District 24.
