Trevecca Men's Basketball | Malone Rallies to Outlast Trojans; at Tiffin Monday

CANTON, Ohio – The Trevecca Nazarene University Men's Basketball team (2-11, 2-9 Great Midwest) battled Malone University (3-5, 2-5 Great Midwest) all afternoon and took the lead with six minutes left, but the host Pioneers rallied for a five-point win, 70-65 in Osborne Hall.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES 

The teams split the season series 1-1 as TNU defeated MU 58-57 January 2 in Trojan Fieldhouse. Malone leads the all-time series 7-2. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Chris Rogers buried a three 35 seconds in to the game for an early Trojan lead. The hosts rolled off eight straight to lead 8-3 with two minutes gone in the game. The Pioneers extended their lead to eight on a couple of occasions. With 8:22 left in the half, MU led by seven (24-17). A three from Calvin Walker cut the lead to four and ignited a 12-2 run that put the Trojans up again, this time 29-26 with 4:07 left in the half. MU scored seven straight, but led by just two (35-33) at the half. 

The first five minutes of the second half were tight, but a 5-0 Malone run over 30 seconds pushed their lead to eight (47-39) with 14:52 left in the contest. Trevecca flipped the script with a 15-2 run over the the next eight minutes of play. With 6:49 left, the Trojans were up 54-49. Malone rallied though with their own run, a 10-0 run and led 59-54 with 4:38 left. The Pioneers never led again by more than five, but the Trojans could get no closer than two. Austin Wills hit a three with 45 seconds left, cutting the lead to two (65-63) and Brendan Newton rebounded a Trojan miss and put it back to cut it to two (67-65) with 11 seconds left. 

PLAYER STATS BREAKDOWN

Brendan Newton had a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. Newton also added four blocks, two assists, a steal, and hit 11 of 14 from the field. Adam Webb and Chris Rogers added 13 each. Imani Starling led the game with seven assists and added six rebounds and six points. Bo Myers led Malone with 19 points and seven rebounds.

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

Trevecca outrebounded Malone 36-29 and had more assists, 18-14. The biggest edge for Malone came on the fast break points, they led 16-0 in that category. Trevecca had a 42-26 edge in points scored in the paint.

Trevecca outshot Malone 48% (28-58) to 42% (24-57) from the field. The Pioneers hit 36% (8-22) from deep while the Trojans hit 31% (5-16). Trevecca only shot four free throw, hitting them all, while Malone hit 14-of-17 at the line.

Trevecca will travel to Tiffin University (3-8, 3-8 Great Midwest) on Monday, February 1 at 2 PM.
