Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans drop road game at Defending G-MAC Champ Hillsdale

Hillsdale, Mich.– Just two days removed from opening the 2020-2021 season at Findlay on Thursday, Trevecca Nazarene University Men's Basketball team (0-2, 0-2 Great Midwest) was back in action on Saturday at Hillsdale College (1-0, 1-0 Great Midwest) for the Chargers' season-opener. The Trojans were unable to overcome a slow start and fell 95-53.

The Trojans went into Hillsdale with a thin roster, with only nine players available to head coach Omar Mance against the co-defending Great Midwest champion.

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

It was the seventh ever meeting between Trevecca and Hillsdale, and the Trojans dropped to 0-7 all-time against the Chargers with the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trevecca struggled to get going right out of the gate, shooting 8-of-28 in the first half and surrendering a 19-2 run after the opening tip. Chris Rogers scored three field goals on nine attempts in the first half to lead the Trojans with eight points. Hillsdale, meanwhile, had a hot shooting start, hitting 10 of 20 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes to take a 45-23 lead into the break.

Hillsdale's momentum carried into the second half, as the Chargers outscored the Trojans 50-32 in the last 20 minutes. It was an excellent shooting night for Hillsdale to start the Chargers' season, shooting over 55% from deep. Hillsdale's Austin Yarian had a particularly strong night, converting 10 of his 17 field-goal attempts, including six threes, to finish with a game-high 28 points.

PLAYER STATS BREAKDOWN

Center Brendan Newton had a strong second half for Trevecca, finishing with a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. After scoring eight first-half points, Rogers only scored two in the second half to finish with 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting.

Austin Wills, Brayden Jackson, and Gabriel McKay provided five more points apiece in the loss.

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

Trevecca cashed in on 21 of its 54 field goal attempts on Saturday, good for 38.9%. The Trojans could not get going from beyond the arc, converting only three of their 13 attempts. Trevecca shot 80% from the free-throw line on 10 attempts but were outrebounded 37-31.

Turnovers held Trevecca back on Saturday. The Trojans gave up possession 18 times compared to Hillsdale's seven turnovers.

WHAT'S NEXT

Trevecca does not have a game scheduled again until December 15, at longtime rival and NCAA Division I foe Lipscomb University. The Trojans also have a game scheduled at Ohio Dominican University on December 19. During this 2020-2021 season, the schedule will be fluid.
