Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Open Great Midwest Play with Win over Tiffin

NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (1-7, 1-0 Great Midwest) opened Great Midwest Athletic Conference play with a 72-66 victory over Tiffin University (5-4, 0-1 Great Midwest) in Trojan Fieldhouse on Thursday.

 

SERIES/HISTORY: 

The Trojans and Dragons faced for just the third time tonight, as Trevecca now leads the all-time series 2-1. Last season, Tiffin's first in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, both teams protected their home floor.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Adam Webb (JR/Lakeland, FL)'s dunk opened the scoring and set the tone for the first half. After Tiffin responded with a 3-pointer the Trojans recaptured the lead they would hold for most of the half when Austin Wills (JR/Benton, IL) hit a 3-pointer. Wills' third made 3-pointer gave the Trojans their largest lead of 13-5 with 15:18 to play in the half. The Dragons swung back late in the half though erasing the eight-point Trojan lead. Tiffin closed the half on a 7-2 run opening a 28-24 lead at the break. In the opening minutes of the second half, the Dragons extended their lead to six on a couple of occasions before the Trojans tied it at 53-53. The Trojans used a 7-0 run to separate 60-53 with 5:58 and that was the difference. The Dragons would not pull closer than five the rest of the way as Trevecca hung a 72-66 victory on the scoreboard.

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

The Trojans shot 46.7% (28-60) from the field, 40% (10-25) from the foul line and were 75% (6-8) shooters from 3-point range.

The Dragons narrowly outrebounded the Trojans 46-45 while the Trojans had the advantage in assists, 20-7 and blocks, 7-1. Tiffin created 11 steals to the Trojans' 2.

 

PLAYER STATS REPORT

Evan Ragsdale (JR/Nashville, TN) scored a team-high 14 points to with five rebounds in the win. Reed Smith (SR/Brentwood, TN) also reached double figures with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. In 23 minutes, Adam Webb grabbed eight rebounds and scored eight points.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Trojans host Ohio Dominican University (3-6, 0-1 Great Midwest) on Saturday at 4:15 PM.

 

Trevecca has not beaten ODU since the Panthers joined the Great Midwest in 2017. The Trojans defeated the Panthers during the 2008 season and trail 3-1 all-time.
