Trevecca Women's Basketball | Unbeaten KWC Panthers Take Down Trojans

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Trevecca Nazarene University women's basketball team (3-10, 0-4 Great Midwest) lost 78-52, to Great Midwest favorite, Kentucky Wesleyan College (11-0, 4-0 Great Midwest) in the Sportscenter on Wednesday.

 

SERIES HISTORY/NOTES

The Panthers have won the last eight games and hold a 12-5 advantage in the all-time series. Trevecca hosts Kentucky Wesleyan on February 22 to conclude the season series.  

   

HOW IT HAPPENED

Kaitlyn Wilks scored within 15 seconds of tipoff before a two-minute scoring drought ensued. The Panthers went scoreless of their first three possessions before netting a Kaylee Duncan 3-pointer. The Trojans connected for three made free-throws to trail 20-5 after the first quarter. KWC produced its best quarter of the night, putting up 29 points in the second frame. Half of the Trojans' points 12 second-quarter points came from Shekinah McLaughlin (FR/Knoxville, TN). The unbeaten Panthers took a 49-17 lead into halftime. In the third quarter, the Trojans strung together an 8-0 run behind four Samantha Whiteman (FR/Covington, OH) points and 3-pointers from both Izzy Franco (SO/Brentwood, TN) and Abbi Buck (JR/Byrdstown, TN). The 8-0 run boosted the Trojans to outscore the conference's best team by eight, 21-13 in the quarter. The fourth quarter was played mostly even with KWC's AJ Thomas scoring the final four points of the game from the free-throw line. The Panthers won 78-52.

 

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

Trevecca shot 38.3% (18-47) from the field and was 4-16 (25%) from 3-point range. The Trojans finished 80.0% (12-15) from the free-throw line.

The Panthers edged the Trojans on the boards, 26-22. KWC produced as many assists (25) as the TNU had turnovers though the Trojans led 13-9 in steals.

 

PLAYER STATS REPORT

Kaitlyn Wilks reached double figures with 11 points and five rebounds. Samantha Whiteman was 3-of-4 from the floor and from the foul line to finish with nine points, five assists, and five steals. Shekinah McLaughlin added eight points off the bench.

 

WHAT'S NEXT    

Trevecca is finished with the 2019 portion of the schedule. The Trojans take the hardwood next in Canton, Ohio when they challenge Malone University (7-3, 3-0 Great Midwest) to open 2020.

 

The game is set for January 2 at 5:00 PM in Malone's Osborne Hall.

 

The meeting will be the seventh all-time and will see the Trojans chasing their first win. The Pioneers lead 6-0 all-time.
