NASHVILLE – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (0-1) lost its season opener in the Trevecca Classic at Trojan Fieldhouse on Friday. Southwest Baptist University (1-0) knocked off the Trojans 64-45.

It is the first meeting in the NCAA Division II era for the two teams in men's basketball.

HOW IT HAPPENED

It was a poor shooting night for both teams as they took to the floor for the first regular season game … the teams shuffled the lead early, but after Trevecca tied the game at 8-8 on a Jaylon Tharpe three with 13:33 to go in the first half, the Bearcats took over … first with an 8-0 run for a 16-8 lead at 10:09 … another Jaylon Tharpe three made it 16-11 with 8:43 remaining, but SBU pushed their lead to 23-14 with a 7-3 run … Adam Webb hit a three-pointer with 4:48 left in the first half cutting the SBU lead to six (23-17), it would be the last points for the Trojans until Jaylon Tharpe hit his third three at the 1:10 mark … SBU scored nine straight between and led 35-20 … The Trojans didn't score again until Imani Starling hit two free throws with 15:44 remaining, making it a 41-22 game … the closest the Trojans pulled within the Bearcats was 16 the rest of the way.

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

Both teams were not sharp from the field, Trevecca shot just 23.6% while SBU shot 36.4% … from three point range the Trojans were 9-30 while the Bearcats shot just 5-27 … the rebounding edge went to SBU 50-36 and maybe the biggest edge for the Bearcats came in the paint where they outscored the Trojans 34-8.

PLAYER STATS REPORT

No Trojan scored in double figures … Imani Starling led the Trojans in several categories, he scored five points, grabbed eight rebounds, dished out three assist, and collected three steals.  

WHAT'S NEXT

The Trojans Drury University (1-0) at 6:15 PM on Saturday in their Trevecca Classic finale.

The last meeting against Drury was during the 2001-2002 season and the Panthers lead the all-time series 2-0.
