Men's Basketball | Jacob Williams Sets Trevecca 3-Point Record in Loss @ Malone

CANTON, Ohio – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team could not hold a 10-point halftime lead and wasted a record-setting night from the field for Jacob Williams (JR/Lebanon, TN), losing 71-67 against Malone University's Osborne Hall.

Malone wins the season series 2-0, which is also the all-time record

Malone defeated Trevecca in their first meeting, Jan. 12th, 70-49 at the Fieldhouse

 

WILLIAMS THREE-POINT RECORD NIGHT

Williams set a new Trojan record for made three-pointers in a game today when he hit nine of 11 attempts from beyond the arch against the Pioneers. The previous record for three-pointers made in a game was eight and occurred six times by five historical names in Trevecca men's basketball history. Craig Grider and David Suddeth were the first to do it during the 1991-1992 season. Grider did it twice with the second occasion of eight made three-pointers coming during the 1992-1993 season. Dan Muchmore (1995-1996), Curtis Lewis (2003-2004), and Jerod Perry (2004-2005) followed with eight made three-pointers in a game.

 

Williams is tied for second on the team in scoring at 13 points per game and has hit 58 three-pointers on the season. The junior is shooting 37.2% (58-156) from beyond the three-point arc. Williams leads the Trojans in steals with 25.

GAME CHRONICLE

With Malone leading 24-20, Trevecca pulled ahead 40-30 at the half with a 20-6 run

In the first half alone, Jacob Williams was 5-5 from deep

A 13-2 run by the Pioneers to open the second half put the hosts up 45-44

With 5:30 remaining the Malone lead, which had been seven, was just one (60-59)

A 7-2 MU run make it 67-61, but Jacob Williams hit his eighth and then record-setting ninth three pointers to tie the game at 67-67

Malone stopped Trevecca three times in the final 30 seconds to hold of for the win

Malone outscored Trevecca 41-27 in the second half for the 71-67 final

 

TEAM STATS BREAKDOWN

TNU shot 35% from the field (22-63), while Malone shot 44% (26-59) and from three-point range, TNU hit 54% (12-22) from deep while Malone only connected on 30% (9-30).

TNU shot 69% (11-16) at the line, compared to MU's 62.5% (10-16)

The rebounding edge went to Malone 41-39 and had a 32-20 edge on points scored in the paint

Jacob Williams led TNU with 27 points and added five rebounds, two assists, and two steals

Devin Whitfield (FR/Lipscomb, AL) scored 13 with five rebounds

Donovan Donaldson (SO/Nashville, TN) also reached double figures with 11

Percy Blade (SR/Louisville, KY) led TNU with nine rebounds and added six points and a team-high seven assists

Djuro Pantos led Malone with 20 points and nine rebounds

 

WHAT'S NEXT  

Trevecca visits Davis & Elkins College (10-12, 5-3 G-MAC) on Feb. 9th at 6:30 PM. Trevecca is 4-3 all-time versus the Senators, but D&E took the last meeting, Jan. 21st, 78-74 at the Fieldhouse.

 

Trevecca plays at Alderson Broaddus University (11-11, 6-2 G-MAC) on Feb. 11 at 3 PM. The Trojans are 1-8 all-time versus the Battlers. ABU beat TNU 76-61 on Jan. 19th at the Fieldhouse.

 

The Trojans next home game is Thursday, February 16th at 8 PM when Ohio Valley University (1-18, 1-7 G-MAC) comes to visit. TNU is 7-1 versus the Scots, winning 81-52 at OVU on Jan. 7th.  

 

The final two home games are Feb. 18 at 4 PM versus Cedarville University (11-12, 3-5 G-MAC) and then Feb. 25 at 4 PM versus Kentucky Wesleyan College (20-2, 7-0 G-MAC). TNU is 6-7 all-time versus the Yellow Jackets and are on a four game win streak in the series. Against KWC, the Trojans are now 2-7 versus the Panthers.

 

Trevecca will play a non-conference exhibition at NCAA Division 1 Belmont University on Feb. 21st at 7 PM.
