Trevecca Men's Basketball | Trojans Handle Cedarville on National TV Game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (10-11, 6-1 G-MAC) played before a packed house and a nationally televised audience on the American Sports Network, knocking off Cedarville University (8-13, 1-6), 79-74, at the Trojan Fieldhouse. 

 

Trevecca next plays at Kentucky State University (10-9) on Tuesday night at 6 PM. Trevecca is 1-1 versus the Thorobreds. They are 8-2 at home this year and are 8-6 in the SIAC.

 

Trevecca is 5-7 all-time versus Cedarville, but with the win tonight have won four of the last five meetings. Trevecca sweeps the season series and has a three-game win streak going over the Yellow Jackets.

 

The teams battled close throughout the opening 10 minutes of the first half, but the Yellow Jackets turned a one point (14-13) TNU lead into a four point lead (18-14) with a 5-0 run at the 9:52 left in the half.

 

Trevecca responded with a 9-0 run and took a 23-18 lead with 8:14 left when Byron Sanford (SR/Louisville, KY) connected on a three-pointer. Mac Walden (SR/Versailles, KY) had two three-pointers in the run that accounted for the other six Trojan points.

 

Trevecca's lead rose to seven points when Christopher Elliott (SR/Spring Hill, TN) hit a three-pointer, giving the Trojans a 30-23 lead at the 6:11 mark. TNU led the remainder of the half and were up 40-36 at the break

 

Trevecca pushed their lead to 14 points, leading 55-41 after a Jalen Palm (SR/Louisville, KY) three at the 15:48 mark. Trevecca's largest lead was 17 points (70-53) with 7:36 left in the half after Percy Blade (JR/Louisville, KY) hit a layup.

 

Cedarville cut the lead to five (74-69) with 1:27 to go when Evan Kraatz hit a three-pointer. Trevecca's defense ended the 16-4 Yellow Jacket run by hitting three free throws to put the game on ice and collected a 79-74 win.

 

Byron Sanford led the Trojans with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting with 2-of-4 shooting from beyond the arch. He added 3-of-4 from the line and collected eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Jalen Palm (12), Tyrell Corlew (SR/Louisville, KY) (12), and Percy Blade (10) all reached double figures scoring as well.

 

Trevecca shot 45% (28-62) from the field. The Trojans hit 50% (10-20) from three-point range and 81% (13-16) from the foul line. CU dominated the boards, 42-29, but turned the ball over 18 times to the Trojans 10. Palm had seven assists and three steals. Mac Walden also had three steals and nine points, hitting 3-of-6 from deep. Blade added four assists and seven rebounds.
