Trevecca Men's Basketball | Battlers Clip Trojans 72-71

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (11-13, 6-3 G-MAC) lost 72-71 to Alderson Broaddus University (18-7, 8-2 G-MAC) on Thursday night at the Trojan Fieldhouse.

Trevecca hosts Davis & Elkins College (10-14, 4-6 G-MAC) on Saturday when the Trojans will celebrate Senior Day prior to the 4 PM contest. Trevecca is 3-2 all-time versus Davis & Elkins

 

Trevecca is now 0-7 all-time versus Alderson Broaddus.

 

Trevecca trailed 38-28 at the half and outscored the Battlers 43-34 in the second half.

 

Trevecca led 6-4 after Jalen Palm hit a jumper with 17:29 left in the first half. Jordan Haywood connected on a three-pointer at the 17:05 mark to put the Battlers up 7-6. When Chavez Harper hit a three with 10:29 left, the ABU lead reached nine (19-10) with a 15-4 run. Their largest first half lead was 11. They first reached that threshold with 5:48 left in the half on a Sanar Shamdeen layup that gave the visitors a 29-18 lead. Matt Gamberoni  scored a field goal on the Trojans next four possessions, helping the Trojans pull to within seven (33-26) with 4:11 to go in the half. Haywood hit another three with :55 left in the half for a 10-point (38-28) halftime lead.

 

Trevecca opened the second half with a 14-6 run that pulled the team within two (44-42) with 16:20 remaining in the game. The Trojans kept the game in single digits before using a 6-0 run to tie the game at 61-61 with 7:09 remaining when Byron Sanford hit a layup. ABU regained the lead, but Tyrell Corlew sank a pair of free throws with 1:08 to go, putting the Trojans up 71-70. The Battlers missed a three with :47 left, but the Trojans missed on the other end and the Battlers got the ball with :15 seconds remaining. Chris Elliott knocked the ball out of bounds with 4.3 seconds remaining, but Thylas Perkins hit a leaning jumper just left of the lane to give the visitors a one-point (72-71) lead with 1.3 seconds remaining. The Trojans had one more chance, but Perkins knocked the ball away from the Trojans and they inbounded the ball and time expired.

 

Byron Sanford led the way for the Trojans with 26 points and nine rebounds. Sanford was 8-11 form the field and hit both of his three pointers and eight of nine from the foul line. Jalen Palm (12), Matt Gamberoni (10), and Percy Blade (10) all hit double figures in scoring as well. Palm added five assists.

 

ABU outrebounded TNU 28-27. Trevecca shot 67% (16-24) from the field in the second half and also hit 3-of-4 from three-point range and 8-of-12 from the foul line. For the game, Trevecca hit 55% (27-49), 31% (4-13) from three-point range, and 72% (13-18) from the foul line.
