Men's Basketball | Christian Brothers Holds Off Trevecca in Rematch

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene University men's basketball team (2-6) dropped a non-conference game against Christian Brothers University (4-2, 1-0 GLVC) 72-64 Saturday night at Trojan Fieldhouse.

 

The Trojans are 1-5 against the Bucs since the start of the NCAA Division II era and the Bucs have taken the last four in the series. Christian Brothers leads the all-time series 29-26.  

 

Trevecca will play in St. Louis next when they take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis (5-4, 1-1 GLVC) on Thursday in a 7 PM non-conference game. UMSL leads the series 1-0. The Tritons handed the Trojans a 94-91 loss earlier this season in the Don Callan Classic at Cedarville.

 

Tonight the Bucs led 17-12 lead with 12:16 left on the first half clock until Donovan Donaldson (SO/Nashville, TN) fueled a 13-0 Trojan run with six points. Donaldson started the run with a three-pointer and contributed a two-point field goal and a and one free throw. When the run ended on a three-pointer from Jacob Williams (JR/Lebanon, TN), the Trojans were up eight (25-17) with 7:48 left.

 

The Bucs turned the table and regained the lead at 28-27 with 3:08 left in the half. Despite Trevecca pushing back to take a one-point (35-34) lead at the break, CBU had gained the momentum.

 

Christian Brothers opened the final 20 minutes with a Brad Miller layup to regain the lead as part of a 5-0 run that put the Bucs up 39-35 with 18:32 left. The Bucs did not trail in the game again.

 

The Bucs pulled ahead by seven (47-40) with 14:38 left in the game, but the Trojans evened the game at 49-49 on a Devin Whitfield (FR/Lipscomb, AL) three-pointer with 10:32 left. CBU responded with eight straight points and did not let the Trojans within three the rest of the way.

 

The Bucs outscored the Trojans 28-20 in the paint and 17-2 in bench scoring.

 

Donavan Donaldson and Percy Blade (SR/Louisville, KY) paced the Trojans with 26 and 12 points respectively. Jacob Williams had 11 points. Blade led the Trojans in rebounds with nine; one shy of a double double.

 

Trevecca shot 43.1% (22-51) from the field and 40.9% (9-22) from three-point range. Trevecca shot 52.4% (11-21) from the line while Christian Brothers shot 68.8% (11-16). The Trojans had the edge in total rebounds on the night 33-28.
