Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca men's basketball team (7-11, 3-1) put an end to #18 Kentucky Wesleyan College's (15-3, 3-1) six game winning streak with a last minute run, 73-72.
The Trojans host two more Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheaders this week after playing eight of their last 10 games on the road. Thursday Jan. 28 TNU hosts the Ohio Valley University Fighting Scots (4-12, 2-2) at 8 PM and on Saturday, Jan. 30 the Salem International University Tigers (3-13, 0-3) visit for a 4 PM game. In the all-time series, Trevecca is 4-0 versus OVU and 3-1 against SIU.
After losing the first four in the series, Trevecca has victories in the last two meetings in the series with the Panthers. KWC still leads the series 4-2, but TNU has won two in a row in the series. TNU defeated KWC 76-76 at the Fieldhouse Feb. 7, 2015.
The Trojans took 7-2 lead with a pair of three pointers from game-high scorer, Tyrell Corlew (SR/Louisville, KY) and a free throw from Matt Gamberoni. The Trojans did not relinquish the lead until the Panthers took a 17-16 lead with 10:56 left in the half on a three pointer from Ken-Jah Bosley.
With 8:16 left in the half the Panthers took the lead 21-20 on a Tamori Manning jumper. They held that lead for the rest of the half and increased it to eight before a Byron Sanford (SR/Louisville, KY) layup with five seconds remaining in the half settled the Panther lead at six, 39-33, at the half.
KWC opened the second half with a 12-4 run and led by 14 (51-37) with 15:20 remaining. With 9:25 left the Trojans had cut the Panther lead to just four (57-53) with a basket and a free throw from Matt Gamberoni. That capped a 16-6 Trojan run.
A three from Mac Walden (SR/Versailles, KY) at 6:22 cut the Panther lead to just two (62-60). With 2:48 left Marcus Fillyaw scored to push the KWC lead to five (72-67), but the Trojans held the Panthers scoreless for the rest of the game and picked up the win with six straight points on a Percy Blade pair of free throws following back-to-back field goals in the post from Matt Gamberoni and Tyrell Corlew. Corlew's basket gave the Trojans a 73-72 lead with 1:15 left and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Tyrell Corlew led the Trojans shooting 70% (7-10) from the field, 50% (3-6) behind the arc and 100% (4-4) at the line for 21 points. Matt Gamberoni (SR/Mulhouse, France) and Mac Walden added 14 each. Gamberoni also grabbed nine rebounds and Percy Blade (JR/Louisville, KY) had five assists.
TNU shot 53.8% (28-for-52) from the field, 31.8% (7-for-22) from the arc and 66.7% (10-for-15) from the line while KWC shot 48.2% (27-for-56), 40% (6-for-15), and 60% (12-for-20) respectively.
