Men's Basketball | Sanford's 34 Leads Trevecca Over Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Trevecca men's basketball team (7-9, 3-2 G-MAC) grabbed a 91-79 win at Cedarville (5-12, 2-2 G-MAC) on Saturday. The win, fueled by Byron Sanford's 34 points, bumps Trevecca above Cedarville in conference standings and breaks their two-game losing streak. Trevecca is now a game back in the race for first with seven of their last nine conference games set to be played at the Trojan Fieldhouse.

 

The Trojans will be back at the Fieldhouse to play Alderson Broaddus (11-5, 4-1 G-MAC) on Thursday, January 22 at 8:00 p.m. in a game that could push the Trojans into a tie for first place.

 

The Yellowjackets took the lead early (14-9) in the first half but the Trojans rallied (7-0 run) to tie the game at 14 before a trio of free throws from Percy Blade (SO/Louisville, KY) put the Trojans on top 16-14 wtih 13:59 to go in the half. Cedarville's JC Faubion put in a layup to tie the game again but Byron Sanford (JR/Louisville, KY) answered with two layups in a row to take and keep the lead. Tyrell Corlew hit a pair of free throws with 11:01 left in the half to cap a 15-4 run that put the Trojans up 24-18. The Trojans would stretch the gap to eight and finish out the half leading 47-39.

 

Byron Sanford scored on a layup at the end of the half, then scored the first six points of the second half for a personal 8-0 run that put the Trojans up 53-39 with 17:45 remaining in the game. Percy Blade scored on a layup with 13:28 remaining to put the Trojans ahead by 17 (62-45), their largest lead of the game.

 

Bryon Sanford led the Trojans with a sweeping 34 points, seven assists, six steals and six rebounds. Percy Blade marked a double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds. Jacob Williams (FR/Lebanon, TN) (13), Tyrell Corlew (JR/Louisville, KY) (12), and Christopher Elliott (JR/Spring Hill, TN) (10) all put up double digits for the Trojans as well.

 

Trevecca hit 47% (27-57) from the field, 32% (7-22) from three-point range, and 75% (30-40) from the foul line. Trevecca had a 39-35 edge in rebounding. TNU had a 20-10 edge in points cored off of turnovers as the Trojans forced 14 CU turnovers while only turning it over 12 times. Trevecca had nine steals that assisted in the turnover edge.

 

Cedarville owns a 6-2 advantage in the all-time series, but the Trojans broke a four game losing streak to the Yellow Jackets and won for the first time in Cedarville where the Trojans had lost on both previous trips to Cedarville.
