Women's Basketball | Trevecca Beats Central State, Moves to G-MAC Semifinals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Paige Baugher led four Trojan players in double-figure scoring as Trevecca Nazarene University (18-8) won a hard fought game over Central State University (8-17) 77-63 Thursday afternoon in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal game at the Trojan Fieldhouse.

 

With the win, Trevecca advances to the G-MAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season. TNU will play tomorrow, March 7 at 5:00 p.m. when it will face fifth-seeded Ursuline College. The Arrows (14-13), who the Trojans beat twice during the regular season, upset fourth-seeded Davis & Elkins College 89-79 in Thursday's second quarterfinal game.

 

Trevecca, winners in 12 of their last 13 games, have a 6-0 all-time record now over Central State and are 4-0 all-time against Ursuline College.

 

Baugher totaled 16 points, including 14 in the second half, on 5-of-8 shooting including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. She also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Anna Mitchell and Sarah Raby combined to score 28 points and grab 18 rebounds. Kylie White chipped in with nine points. Christina Curtner totaled seven points, six rebounds and six assists while Kaci Britt Bell scored seven points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out five assists.

 

Iniqua Snell tallied a game-high 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Shakeira Lang added 10 points and Akwar Obong came off the bench to tally eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

 

In the first half, Snell was the story of the game as she scored 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting. She tallied 11 of her team's first 13 points as CSU took a 13-9 lead with 14:52 left.

 

Mitchell gave TNU its biggest lead (21-17) after a jumper with 9:22 remaining in the half.

 

That sparked a 12-2 run for the Lady Marauders who found themselves up six (29-23) after a Snell layup with about six minutes left.

 

CSU would maintain that lead and take a 38-34 lead into the break. Trevecca was held to 34.2% shooting in the first half including a 2-for-12 (16.7%) line from three-point range.

 

In the second half, TNU scored the first four points and tied the game at 38 forcing a Central State timeout.

 

Snell put the Lady Marauders back up six (44-38) with 16:53 left before the Trojans, again, rallied to tie the game.

 

Central State took its final lead, 5755, after a Regina Allen jumper with 8:25 left before Trevecca exerted its will.

 

The top-seeded Trojans followed with back-to-back 3s from Baugher and Mitchell to take command.

 

Baugher gave Trevecca its first double-digit lead, 70-59, after two free throws with 4:08 left.

 

Over the final nine minutes of the game, the Trojans outscored the Lady Marauders 22-8.

 

Trevecca shot much better (5-of-11; 45.4%) from three-point range and in the second and as a team had its best output of the season at the free throw line (20-of-23; 87%).

 

The Trojans held CSU to just 28.6% (10-of-35) shooting in the second half.

 

Trevecca will face Ursuline College (14-13) in the G-MAC Semifinals Friday at 5 p.m.
