Men's Basketball | Tusculum Outscores Trevecca @ Carson Newman Classic

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Trevecca Nazarene (1-2) men's basketball a high-scoring affair in the Carson Newman University Classic. Tusculum College (1-2) defeated TNU 110-106 in the classic opener at Holt Fieldhouse.  

 

The game was tight early and tied 16-16 after a David Woodard layup at the 14:22 mark of the first half. A three-pointer from Pioneer BJ Fisher ended the tie and sparked a 29-12 run that put TC up 45-28 with 7:28 to go in the half. Trevecca worked the lead down to single digits on a couple of occasions, but Tusculum pushed the lead to 17 again before settling for a 14-point (62-48) lead 62-48 at the half.

 

Byron Sanford scored the opening basket of the second half to pull the Trojans to within 12 of Tusculum, but the Pioneers used a 10-3 run to establish their largest lead at 19-points (72-53) with 17:29 remaining. It was at that point that the Trojans mounted a strong response with a 32-11 run that put the Trojans up 85-83 with 9:30 remaining. Trevecca led 87-86 when TC turned the table again with an 8-0 run that put the Pioneers ahead for good. Trevecca cut the lead to three points a couple of more times, but could never regain the advantage.

 

Trevecca outscored Tusculum 58-48 in the second half while shooting 57% (19-33) from the field. Byron Sanford, who led Trevecca with 27 points, nearly had a triple-double in the second half with 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

 

Four Pioneers hit double figures in scoring led by 26 from Darius Carter and 23 from Addision Flynn. As a team TC shot 58% (35-60) from the field, 40% (8-20) from three-point range, and 69% (32-46) from the foul line.

 

Byron Sanford was the game's high scorer with 27 points and added nine rebounds and eight assists. Sanford was 7-of-11 from the field and hit 13-of-14 from the foul line. David Woodard added 20 points with eight rebounds and hit 11-of-16 from the charity stripe. Miles Jordan (12), Taylor Clay (12),and Jordan Hanner (10) all reached double figures in scoring. Clay was 3-for-3 from three-point range.

 

Trevecca shot 50% (31-62) from the line, 56% (9-16) from three-point range, and 73% (35-48) from the foul line.

 

Trevecca had a 39-30 advantage on the boards, but turned the ball over 16 times to TC's 10. 

 

Tusculum outscored the Trojans in some key areas. The Pioneers had a 50-36 advantage on points in the paint, 23-4 on fast break scoring, 26-9 on points scored off of turnovers. Trevecca topped the second chance scoring 24-12.
